Hello parents of bunnies!Today we are going to talk about a very important topic - the diet of rabbits. We know that rabbits are very cute little creatures, and their health directly affects their quality of life. Therefore, as parents, it is our responsibility to ensure that they eat safe and healthy food. So, what vegetables can't rabbits eat?Let's take a look.
First of all, we have to make it clear that rabbits are herbivores and mainly feed on various forages and feeds. However, there are some vegetables that are common to us humans that are fatal to rabbits.
The first is cruciferous vegetables, such as mustard greens, rape, bok choy, cabbage, radish, etc. This kind of vegetable contains a substance called glucoside, when it is glycosome, myrosinase, will produce thiocyanate, isothiocyanate and other goiter toxins, these toxins will directly damage the rabbit's liver, kidneys, affect the healthy growth of rabbits.
The second, potato leaves and eggplant. These two vegetables are high in solanine, which can cause poisoning if eaten by rabbits, manifesting as symptoms such as abdominal pain and vomiting.
The third, onions and leeks. Onions contain a thiosulfate compound that can have a significant effect on red blood cells in rabbits, leading to hemolytic anemia. In severe cases, it can cause red blood cells to burst and can also poison rabbits, resulting in excessive drooling, oral irritation, drowsiness, weakness, and red urine. The same goes for leeks and garlic.
In addition to this, we also need to note that the nitrite content of stuffy yellowed vegetables is very high, which can reach 24 mg. If rabbits are fed this vegetable, the rabbits may cause nitrite poisoning and even death in severe cases. Therefore, when we feed rabbit greens, we must ensure freshness, and the amount of each feeding should not be too much, and it should be fed together with other feeds.
Finally, I would like to remind all parents of rabbits that in addition to the above-mentioned vegetables, try to avoid feeding rabbits, and feed less vegetables with too much water. Because rabbits' intestines need to consume enough crude fiber to function properly, and vegetables with too much water contain too little crude fiber to promote rabbits' intestinal peristalsis. A large number of vegetables rot and ferment inside the rabbit's intestines, producing harmful germs. Especially for rabbits under 6 months old, their intestines are more sensitive, blindly feeding fresh vegetables with too high water content can easily lead to rabbit diarrhea, and some of the poor physique will even die directly.
Overall, as parents of baby rabbits, we need to be aware of the dietary taboos of rabbits and avoid feeding them inappropriate foods. Only in this way can our little rabbit grow up healthily and bring us a steady stream of happiness. I hope everyone can be a good rabbit father and mother, so that our little rabbit can live a happy life!
