Recently, I have published the names of the combatants of several companies of the 1st Artillery Division, however, many followers have pointed out that I have missed the formation of the command platoon. For this reason, I feel it is necessary to publish a special article to explain this. It should be clarified that it was not that I omitted the command platoon formation, but that during that particular time period, the artillery company did not have a command platoon at all.
The artillery company did not have a command platoon formation during the 1979 self-defense counterattack, mainly because the battery was classified as reserve artillery at that time. Reserve artillery is an independent artillery unit that is subordinate to the general headquarters or a large military region or front army, and is mainly equipped with large-caliber and long-range artillery and tactical missiles. They are artillery mobile forces in the hands of commanders at and above the military district level, and are usually used to strengthen the combined army operating in the main direction of the campaign and tactics to support its operations with firepower.
The first reserve artillery division of our army was the First Artillery Division, which was established in January 1949, and the whole army reached a maximum of 34 artillery divisions, equipped with more than 5,000 large-caliber artillery and rocket artillery of various types. The reserve artillery divisions were well-equipped and well-trained, representing the highest level of artillery of our army. However, with the passage of time, the last two remaining artillery divisions of the reserve artillery division in 2013, the 1st and 9th Artillery Divisions, were withdrawn from the stage of history and became a memory of the past.
In the 1979 war against Vietnam, our army's powerful reserve artillery played a key role, forming a crushing advantage over Vietnamese artillery. With its fierce firepower, high accuracy, and fast firing speed, our artillery made the Vietnamese artillery retreat one after another on the battlefield in Vietnam. A large number of the enemy is mainly due to the precise strikes of our artillery, and the reserve artillery has played an important role in the war and is deservedly known as the god of war.
It should be emphasized that the artillery companies in the reserve artillery did exist during a special period of time, but only within two years after the issuance of the "New Establishment of the Five-Regiment System and Howitzer Division" by the ** Military Commission on May 31, 1977. This new establishment has unified regulations on the establishment and equipment of reserve artillery divisions throughout the army, and has also adjusted the personnel, structure, and equipment at all levels.
According to the new establishment regulations, the artillery regiment merged the reconnaissance and communications of the battalion headquarters and the command platoon of the artillery companies into a single company and established the battalion command company. The establishment of the war artillery company includes the company headquarters, two artillery platoons, a driver squad and a cooking squad.
On June 25, 1977, the command company of the first battalion of the 26th Artillery Regiment was established, but it was abolished in July 1979, and the professional cadres and soldiers of each platoon were dispersed and placed in each artillery company, and the command platoon of the artillery company was restored. Perhaps it was because of the actual combat test of self-defense and counter-attack that the establishment of the battalion command company no longer met the needs of the war, so it was abolished in just two years.
When the first battalion joined the war in 1979, the cadres of the command company of the first battalion included company commander Cai Zhongyang, instructor Guo Zhengcai, deputy company commander Li Jiancheng, deputy instructor Gao Zhiqian, first platoon commander Mu Jiawu, second platoon commander Yue Jinghai, third platoon commander Wei Ronggui, and secretary general Li Shicun. The squad leaders included Dong Xianxian, Hu Kegeng, and Chen Ying of the reconnaissance platoonZhao Fuguang and Qu Rongmao of the wireless platoon;Jiang Guohua, Xie Chuhua, and Chen Heping of the wired platoon;Wang Zhenghua, the cooking squad leader of logistics, and Tao Xinming, the driver squad leader.
In the 1979 war against Vietnam, the command company of the first battalion had a total of 10 squads, one company headquarters, 8 cadres, 87 soldiers, and a total of 95 officers and men. In the battalion structure, it was attached to the 125th Division and the 162nd Division to participate in the battle in the direction of Shuikou, and at the same time, it was also attached to the 55th Army to participate in the Battle of Lang Son in the direction of Friendship Pass. What is amazing is that the entire company did not have a single ** in the battle, and there was no damage or loss of equipment. During the battle, 8 people joined the party, 1 was awarded second-class merit, and 35 were awarded third-class merit.
More than 40 years have passed, and the years of war against Vietnam have passed with the passage of time. The soldiers of the command company of the first battalion fought bravely on the battlefield, and now many of them have passed away, including company commander Cai Zhongyang, deputy company commander Li Jiancheng, third squad leader Chen Ying, sixth squad leader Jiang Guohua, eighth squad leader Chen Heping, driver squad leader Tao Xinming and others. Here, we would like to express our deep memory to those comrades-in-arms who sacrificed their lives for the country!
