South Korea s newlyweds have a record rate of childlessness

According to the latest data released by Statistics Korea on the 11th, the number of newlyweds in South Korea has shown a downward trend year after year, and the childlessness rate has risen, reaching the highest level since Statistics Korea began relevant records in 2015.

The newlyweds in this latest statistic refer to couples who have been married for less than five years and live in South Korea as of November 1, 2022. Statistics Korea began counting newlyweds in 2015, and this figure increased from 147 that year20,000 pairs have been declining year by year, falling to 103 in 202220,000 pairs.

Among the newlyweds, 81 were first-time couples50,000 pairs, accounting for about 79%. According to Yonhap News Agency, childless couples account for 46 of the first-time marriages4%, a year-on-year increase of 06 percentage points, the highest level since 2015.

In recent years, the phenomenon of late marriage and non-marriage in Korean society has gradually increased, and the number of newborns has been decreasing.
