One early morning in 1944, Chiang Kai-shek got up early in the morning and stood in front of the window in a comfortable mood after washing. An adjutant crept up behind him and handed him a secret telegram from the White House. Chiang Kai-shek glanced at it hurriedly, but was shocked by the resolute wording in the secret telegram.
After reading the contents, he handed the telegram to the attendant adjutant beside him, and said lightly: "Inform Chief of General Staff He to come to see me." ”
Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of Kuomintang soldiers rushed to western Yunnan, and a major battle began. What the hell is going on?
Why did the contents of the secret telegram move Chiang Kai-shek so much? Why did he suddenly send troops?
After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, due to China's weak industrial base at that time, and the urgent need for a large number of materials and foreign aid, at the beginning of 1938, people from 28 counties in western Yunnan worked together, prepared their own rations and tools, and went through hardships to build the 990-kilometer-long Yunnan-Burma Railway in 10 months, which became an important blood transfusion channel for China's Anti-Japanese War.
However, the Japanese threatened to continue, and in 1940 they cut off the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and set their sights on the Yunnan-Burma Highway, China's only remaining aid route to China.
In December 1941, China and Britain signed the Sino-British Agreement on the Mutual Defense of the Burma Road to defend Burma, establishing a Sino-British military alliance.
However, Britain's distrust of the squadron led to a series of obstructions, forcing the Chinese expeditionary force to stand by on the Sino-Burmese border. At the beginning of 1942, the British and Burmese armies were losing one after another, and the British finally agreed to the squadron to enter Burma, but did not provide active support.
Under the powerful Japanese offensive, the Chinese expeditionary force was in trouble, and the British army made frequent mistakes, which led to the defeat of the first Burma operation.
The British withdrew without permission, and the Chinese expeditionary force had to stay on the border. In the face of difficulties, Du Yuming marched forward bravely under the instructions of Chiang Kai-shek, braved the rain to cross the Savage Mountain, and faced all kinds of dangers, countless soldiers of the expeditionary force sacrificed their lives for the country.
Despite the defeat in the first Burma operation, the Chinese Expeditionary Force was not discouraged. With international support almost interrupted, after hard work, the squadron finally launched the western Yunnan in March 1944.
However, the battle plan had already been leaked, and the transportation of materials was blocked, and the battle situation was at a stalemate.
Roosevelt sent an urgent telegram revealing that the Japanese army was threatening the Allied supply lines, forcing Chiang Kai-shek to finally sign the order for the Nu River offensive at a critical moment.
The Chinese Expeditionary Force successfully crossed the river and launched a fierce offensive on Songshan, Longling and other key points, and in the face of the stubborn defense of the Japanese army, the squadron finally won the victory of Songshan after three months of bloody fighting.
On March 30, 1945, the Chinese Expeditionary Force pursued the victory, successfully overcame all difficulties, and won the victory of Qiao Mei. The victory in the Battle of Western Yunnan and Northern Burma not only effectively dealt a blow to the Japanese invaders, but also opened the way for the international transportation line in southwest China and accelerated the demise of the Japanese fascists.
This is the hardest line of defense built by the Chinese Expeditionary Force with their blood and lives, and it shows the world the tenacity and fearlessness of the Chinese people. In this land, young people have come forward one after another, and in order to defend their homeland, in order to defend themselves against the invaders, they have paid a huge price.
It was these heroic ancestors who, with their firm faith and fearless courage, exchanged for the peace and tranquility we have now.
