Europe s second largest port will use hydrogen powered tugboats

BRUSSELS, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Europe's second-largest port in Belgium, said in a press release on the 12th that a hydrogen-powered tugboat is ready to be officially put into operation in the port area of Antwerp, a breakthrough that is crucial for the port to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

CMB., a company specializing in the development of internal combustion engine technology for hydrogen-powered tugboatsAccording to Tech, it is the world's first tugboat powered by an internal combustion engine that burns hydrogen and conventional fuel. By using hydrogen and diesel dual-fuel medium-speed engines, the vessel's conventional fuel consumption and associated exhaust emissions will be reduced by an overall 65%.

The tugboat has a total length of 30 meters, a bollard pull of 65 tons, and is equipped with two hybrid main engines as well as two diesel auxiliary engines. 6 groups of hydrogen storage tanks on deck can carry 415 kg of compressed hydrogen.

The EU will include marine transport in the ETS from 2024 and tax carbon emissions from shipping within the EU. Among them, all carbon emissions from voyages between EU ports will be included in the ETS;For voyages between EU ports and non-EU ports, 50% of carbon emissions will be included in the ETS.
