In the tense Middle East, the U.S. military quietly launched a decapitation operation that successfully killed a senior commander of Al-Shabaab in Somalia. He is accused of orchestrating the 2020 attack on a military base in Manda Bay, Kenya, which killed three Americans. The operation was announced by Somali Daoud Awes, who confirmed that the U.S. military launched a drone strike on the southern Somali town of Gilib on December 17, killing Malim Ayman, the leader of a Al-Shabaab unit responsible for terrorist attacks in Kenya and Somalia.
The forces led by Ayman are known as the "Ayman Army" and are the main military force of Al-Shabaab in Kenya. They have carried out a number of deadly terrorist attacks in Somalia and neighboring countries, the worst of which was the 2015 attack on Garissa University, which killed 148 people. The U.S. military has an air base in Manda Bay, Kenya, which is used to reconnoiter Somalia and provide counterterrorism training and support. Because the United States has designated Al-Shabaab as a terrorist group and supported the Somali Army in attacking it, the US military has been targeted many times.
The decapitation was not the first such mission for U.S. forces in Somalia. Back in October 2022, the U.S. military launched an airstrike in Somalia that killed a key leader of Al-Shabaab. In April 2020, U.S. forces also shot and killed another senior al-Shabaab commander.
It is noteworthy that the situation in Somalia has been volatile recently. A merchant ship was reportedly hijacked by heavily armed men off the coast of Somalia. It is also the latest incident in which the EU Navy reported that a Maltese-flagged merchant ship had been hijacked in the same area. The volatile situation in Somalia remains a serious problem, and the international community urgently needs to find solutions to ensure security and stability in the region. The decapitation operation of the US military is undoubtedly aimed at fighting terrorism, but is it enough to solve the problem?Clearly, we need more efforts and cooperation to resolve tensions in the Middle East.
