He is part of a new generation of goalkeepers who are generally comfortable with the ball at their feet, and that ability is becoming so important in the modern game.
But Arteta's handling of the goalkeeper's position, as well as his rude response to his question, put pressure on both Raya and his students.
While Ramsdale was certainly surprised by the decision, he has maintained a positive attitude since being left out of the starting line-up, at least publicly, and appears to have a good relationship with Raya, putting the manager's vision ahead of his personal interests.
But in last month's game against Brentford, the Englishman was called upon to replace the unavailable Raya, but he himself appeared lacking in confidence and made a number of mistakes that could easily lead to goals.
Both goalkeepers are clearly out of form and are struggling to be scrutinized, which undoubtedly poses a problem for Arteta's department, which looks very strong at least on paper.
