On December 28, the award ceremony of the 2023 Shandong Maternal and Child Health Science Popularization Contest was held in Jinan, jointly sponsored by Shandong Maternal and Child Health Association, Qilu Evening News and Qilu One Point. Guo Zhongsheng from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital) won the third prize for his entry "Diet Needs to Be Cautious - The Treatment Experience of an Acute Hepatitis E Patient".
In clinical practice, there are more and more patients with severe hepatitis and severe liver damage caused by hepatitis E infection, including special groups such as expectant mothers. At the award ceremony, Guo Zhongsheng shared the original intention of creating this work.
Guo Zhongsheng mentioned that in the past, cases of hepatitis E patients were relatively rare, but in recent years, the incidence of hepatitis E has shown an increasing trend, and the incidence of hepatitis E in China has exceeded that of hepatitis A for 10 consecutive years, and the mortality rate has exceeded that of hepatitis A for 15 consecutive years. It is important to note that hepatitis E is also a type of occult hepatitis, which is easy to ignore because the symptoms after infection are not obvious or atypical.
Many patients have developed liver failure by the time they arrive at the hospital, and many patients with hepatitis A and B have sudden liver failure because of hepatitis E infection. Guo Zhongsheng said that he had diagnosed and treated a very serious patient, who had severe jaundice and obvious coagulation dysfunction, although after a series of artificial livers and other **, the patient was not treated in the end.
Unwilling to see such regrets, Guo Zhongsheng also hopes that through popular science, more people can understand hepatitis E and pay attention to the prevention of hepatitis E.
There is a risk of infection as long as you eat. Guo Zhongsheng said that hepatitis E is an infectious disease, and digestive tract transmission is the most common way of transmission of hepatitis E virus, so it is necessary to pay attention to developing good eating habits, especially hand hygiene.
In addition to eating hygienic habits, the most important thing is to get vaccinated against hepatitis E.
Hepatitis E vaccination is the most direct and cost-effective way to prevent it. Guo Zhongsheng introduced that China has the world's first and only marketed hepatitis E vaccine, and its efficacy and safety have been fully confirmed in more than 10 years of clinical application, and relevant studies have been published in The Lancet.
Guo Zhongsheng reminded that for high-risk groups of hepatitis E infection, especially livestock breeders, travelers in epidemic areas, catering workers, group dwellers (students, officers and soldiers), patients with chronic liver diseases, women of childbearing age, and the elderly, it is recommended to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect their health.
