The wheat planting pattern in Sichuan Province is mainly based on rice and wheat double cropping, and there is generally nearly two months of idle land between rice harvest and wheat sowing, and there is a large amount of idle cultivated land in the wheat production season, resulting in an obvious imbalance in rice and wheat yield. On May 13, 2000, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, father of the Green Revolution and wheat breeder Norman EDuring his visit to the Qionglai Wheat Breeding Base of Sichuan Agricultural University, Borlang said: "Extending the wheat sowing date in Sichuan may be the most important way to further improve the wheat yield in the region in the future." ”
Tan Feiquan, associate professor of the College of Agronomy of Sichuan Agricultural University, led the team to devote itself to the cultivation and research of new early-sown wheat products for a long time, and made great progress. The team has cultivated a series of new wheat varieties (lines), the safe sowing date can be advanced by about 1 month, and the yield per unit area can be increased by more than 50%.Furthermore, a new "rice-wheat" planting model was proposed, which could not only prolong the growth period of wheat, increase the yield per unit area, but also greatly reduce the production cost. It is estimated that if 90% of the rice planting area adopts the planting method of "rice and wheat", the total wheat output in the region can be increased by 165%, and the annual cost can be saved by 3.6 billion yuan, which can effectively improve the economic benefits and enthusiasm of farmers in wheat planting and expand more planting space for wheat planting. The findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science on November 20.
