A robbery and murder case in 1994 changed Li Jin's life. In October of this year, two passengers in Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province, got off the train and stayed in a guest house, and were found robbed and killed in their room in the early morning of the next day. In September of the following year, 27-year-old Li Jin was arrested on the street. He said that although he was in Dehong, 700 kilometers away at the time of the crime, he pleaded guilty under torture by the investigating authorities. Not only that, but he also identified the other two brothers at the repeated request of **. The two were subsequently acquitted, but Li Jin was only sentenced to life for life. It was not until 2017 that he was released from prison after eight commutations.
After regaining his freedom, Li Jin began to run for himself. In the previous final judgment of the Sichuan High Court, the only evidence for the conviction was the confession of guilt, and the sweat fingerprints, sports rubber shoe prints, and pedaling marks taken from the scene of the crime were not conclusively pointed. These doubts have all been confirmed in today's retrial verdict.
But, is late justice still justice?Unmarried, childless, living on 100 yuan a day, after today's verdict, Li Jin said: Such a verdict came quite late. He is ready to apply for state compensation.
Compensation is only to make up for it after the fact, and the key is to avoid mistakes at the source. Over the years, the Public Procuratorate has been improving relevant processes and mechanisms, and since 2013, a total of 65 major criminal wrongful conviction cases have been corrected. "Resolutely correct and prevent unjust and wrongful cases" was written into the work report of the Supreme People's Procuratorate at this year's "two sessions."
