The UK is investing £300 million to launch Europe's first high-content low-enriched uranium programme
According to the news of the British ** network on January 7,The UK's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced a £300 million investment to launch Europe's first high-content low-enriched uranium (HALEU) programmeto produce enriched uranium for the next generation of nuclear reactors.
HALEU is the specialty fuel needed to power the next generation of nuclear reactors, which is currently only commercially produced in Russia. Desnz said the plan would make the UK the first country in Europe to launch a high-tech HALEU nuclear fuel programme to meet the nuclear fuel needed for the UK's homegrown nuclear energy development, as well as provide advanced nuclear fuel to the world and end Russia's "nuclear fuel threat". The landmark plan will provide the UK with up to 24GW of clean, reliable nuclear power by 2050, meeting a quarter of the UK's electricity needs. It is reported that the first HALEU plant in the UK will be operational in the early 2030s.
