According to the importance, population size, habitat location and special representativeness of terrestrial wildlife species in China, the first batch of important habitats of terrestrial wildlife are divided into six categories, including the survival and breeding areas of rare and endangered species and the distribution areas of wildlife clusters, involving 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, covering 565 countries.

The habitats, breeding grounds and migration sites of wild animals under Class I and II key protection involve 127 species of mammals, 339 species of birds, 62 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 37 species of insects.

In accordance with the requirements of the "Wildlife Protection" to strengthen the protection of important habitats of wild animals, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration organized experts to collect the information and data obtained from various wildlife resource surveys in China for more than 20 years, classified and sorted out the characteristics of the natural distribution of wild animals in China, population activity rules and biological Xi, and formulated the "Interim Measures for the Identification of Important Habitats of Terrestrial Wild Animals", which set the identification standards, assessment procedures, archival information, and scope delimitation of important habitats of terrestrial wild animals. Nomenclature conventions, etc. After analysis and evaluation one by one, the first batch of important habitats for terrestrial wildlife was screened. In the next step, we will further strengthen the investigation, monitoring and evaluation of areas that have continuously improved habitat conditions but are not included in the list, and those that meet the relevant conditions will be included in the list one after another.

In recent years, China has incorporated a large number of wildlife habitats into the scope of protection by building a nature reserve system with national parks as the main body, nature reserves as the basis, and various nature parks as supplements, effectively maintaining the safety of wildlife habitats and promoting their continuous optimization, which has played a huge role in saving rare and endangered wild animals and maintaining the best wildlife species.
