With the winter transfer window approaching, the Premier League's giants have embarked on reinforcement plans aimed at further refining their tactical system with signings to prepare for the title. The British ** "Daily Mirror" took stock of the direction and goals of the six giants of the Premier League. First up is Arsenal, who have set their targets for the winter transfer window.
Although the team's forwards Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have played an important role in the past two seasons, they have a similar type and a less than satisfactory goalscoring efficiency. Therefore, in order to fight for the championship, it is imperative to bring in an efficient striker. Powerful centre-forward Ivan Toney appears to be their best option, however even if he has returned from suspension, Brentford FC will be demanding a huge transfer fee. Manchester City, for their part, need to step up defensively.
Although the club has been charged with 115 charges by the FA due to financial problems and is under further investigation, that has not stopped them from making a big splash in the winter transfer window. Boss Pep Guardiola says City are in desperate need of fresh blood in every position, however if reinforcements are made, the defensive side remains an area they need to strengthen urgently.
Pep Guardiola's side have struggled defensively this season, with the defence porous at times and a bit of a disorganized defensive system when opponents are on a frantic counter-attack. Liverpool are looking to bring in a defensive midfielder, with Jurgen Klopp starting to revamp their midfield after captain Jordan Henderson left in the summer.
Despite the introduction of quality midfielders such as World Champion McAllister, Szobosloy and Endo, it is clear that further work is needed to build the midfield. In the race for the title, a top-class defensive midfielder is a shortcoming in the squad, and his presence can strengthen the midfield and create a barrier in front of the backline, which Japan international Endo is clearly not up to. Manchester United, on the other hand, are looking for a striker.
Although they signed young striker Hojlund for a whopping £72million in the summer transfer window, his performances at Old Trafford fell far short of his high price. United's attacking line has lost its dynamism, Marcus Rashford's form has continued to be sluggish, and Anthony Martial and Garnacho have also been unable to salvage. As a result, the Red Devils are in desperate need of a reliable goalscorer to bolster their attacking line.
Chelsea are also in desperate need of an effective striker, with new signing Nkunku suffering a long-term injury, Jackson unable to score consistently, and Mauricio Pochettino's attacking system lacking a scorer who can set the chancell. As such, they could turn to Napoli centre-forward Osimhen, the Nigerian striker who has proven his finishing prowess in Serie A. As for Tottenham Hotspur, they are also in desperate need of a striker to strengthen their squad due to injuries.
