The European Plastics** PRE has identified the steps needed to drive the EU towards a circular plastics economy over the next five years.
The PRE recommends "decisive action" to combat greenwashing (**Panthermedia Makidotvn (Yaymicro)).
In a recently published special declaration, the PRE said that the EU for 2024-2029 "will decisively provide a solid legislative framework that considers the plastics industry as a strategic pillar of the transition to a circular and low-carbon EU".
Prep said Europe's actions should focus on five priorities. First, if the shift to circular plastics is to be accelerated, European institutions "should address systemic barriers, promote a Europe-wide harmonized collection system, and set realistic targets and material content targets".
Combating "greenwashing" through so-called "decisive action" is another key component of expanding the cycle. In order to avoid the use of unverified recycled plastics from non-EU countries, "transparency should be increased and a level playing field should be created for all products, including imported products."
"The implementation of a reliable verification and certification system plays a key role in this by ensuring the traceability of waste-derived materials throughout the value chain," said Pre. He also called for "forward-looking policies based on scientific assessments and reliable data."
In order to unlock the circular potential of plastics, a series of incentives must be developed across the value chain "to drive investment in the EU's capacity and technology," said PRE President Ton Emans.
