The Sino-Vietnamese War was a 10-year border conflict in which the Chinese People's Liberation Army fought fierce battles with Vietnamese troops on the Yunnan and Guangxi borders from 1979 to 1989. Among them, the most heroic battle took place on July 12, 1984, when the 119th Regiment of the 40th Division of the 14th Army of the Kunming Military Region fought an earth-shattering victory in the direction of the bow of the ship in the Laoshan area.

The battle was called "712 "Great victory, some people also call it the Battle of Songmaoling, but this name is not accurate, because Songmaoling is only a part of the battlefield. The characteristics of this battle are that the PLA used strong artillery support, 16 artillery battalions and regimental artillery in 16 hours, a total of 1261 tons of artillery shells, providing effective fire cover for infantry defense, so that the Vietnamese army paid more than 3,000 people, while the PLA only suffered slight losses.

The hero of this battle was Zhang Youxia, the commander of the 119th Regiment, who personally sat on the front line and commanded the soldiers to bravely kill the enemy and resist the crazy attack of the Vietnamese army. Some people say that Zhang Youxia defeated the offensive of six regiments of the Vietnamese army with one enemy and six regiments, what a great feat! But is this claim really credible? Is this really the case?

The origin of the saying "one enemy six".

The source of this statement is a book called "The Secret Record of the Sino-Vietnamese War", which was published by the Times Literature and Art Publishing House in February 1990 and written by Jin Hui, Zhang Huisheng and Zhang Weiming. The book was a rare unofficial account of the Sino-Vietnamese War at the time, which attracted a lot of attention, and there were also some interviews with the combatants in the book, which made people feel very real and authoritative. Many people's understanding of the Sino-Vietnamese War began with this book.

On page 39, the Secret Record writes that on April 18, 1988, in the conference room of the 40th Division Artillery Regiment in Kaiyuan City, Yunnan Province, the regiment commander Zhao Koubin recalled: "That day, my regiment did more than 10,000 rounds, and by 12 noon, 2. .All 5 bases are gone. As soon as Zhang Youxia heard that the shell was gone, he spread his arms and turned his back all of a sudden. Without the artillery blockade, he could not block the onslaught of the six regiments of the Vietnamese army with one regiment. Slap and pinch the middle of the man. I said, the shells will come right away. As soon as the artillery was fired in the morning, I let the convoy set off and pulled the shells for me, and more than 470 trucks were dispatched from Honghe Prefecture to rush ammunition for me. Waiting for the empty shells, the Vietnamese army occupied the 164 heights. ”

This passage is the root of the saying "one enemy six". But is this statement in line with historical truth? We only need to look at the deployment of the PLA and the Vietnamese army to know the answer.

The defense of the 14th Army on the Laoshan front was divided into four directions, three directions west of the Panlong River were taken care of by the 40th Division, and one direction to the east was taken care of by the 41st Division.

Laoshan direction: Composed of the 120th Regiment (owing 3 battalions) to the 2nd battalion of the 118th regiment, the army artillery regiment (owing the 122nd cannon battalion, the 2nd howitzer battalion of the division, and a group of the division's anti-chemical company, occupying the main positions in the Laoshan area, with 4 infantry companies as the main force, 2 infantry companies as reserves, and 1 infantry battalion as reserves.

662.6 Heights Direction (i.e., Songmaoling Direction): Composed of the 2nd Battalion of the 119th Regiment and the 1st Battalion Artillery Company, it occupied the positions of Heights 100 and 143, and was the right flank battalion of the 119th Regiment.

Nala direction: composed of the 3rd Battalion of the 119th Regiment and the 1st Battalion Artillery Company of the 118th Regiment, occupying the positions of the 154th, 142nd, and 128th heights, as the left flank battalion of the 119th Regiment. (The 1st Battalion is deployed in the Nanlang and Litouzhai areas and is the reserve battalion of the 119th Regiment.) )

Bali River Dongshan direction: Composed of the 122nd Cannon Battalion of the 122nd Regiment with the Divisional Artillery Regiment, it occupied the positions of Bali River Dongshan and Bajiaoping, with 1 battalion as the main force and 2 battalions as the reserve.

The Vietnamese army dispatched the 141st Regiment, the 149th Regiment, the 174th Regiment, the 266th Regiment, the 876th Regiment, and the 198th Regiment and the 821st Regiment each to launch an attack on the 8-kilometer front line of our Lao Son to strengthen the size of the infantry division, which was also divided into four directions, with the 662nd of the battle line6 highland direction and nala direction focus. The tactics of the Vietnamese army were to first sneak attack and then attack, while breaking through head-on, pinning down the two flanks, and then attacking centripetally, with the aim of opening a gap in the direction of the 119th regiment, and then gradually recovering the Lao Son area.

The specific combat tasks of the former command of the Second Military Region of the Vietnamese Army are: the Lao Son direction is under the responsibility of the 149th Regiment, 6626 Heights direction is responsible for 1 battalion of the 876th Regiment and 821** Regiment, 1 battalion of the 174th Regiment and 198th ** Regiment in the direction of Nala, and 141 Regiment and 266th Regiment are responsible for the Dongshan direction of the Bali River, a total of 5 infantry regiments and 2 ** battalions, which can also be said to be 6 regiments.

One against six" is wrong.

As can be seen from the above deployment of friend and foe, in 662The 6th Regiment defending in the direction of the 119th Heights and Nala faced 2 infantry regiments and 2 ** battalions of the Vietnamese army, not 6 regiments. Moreover, this is a tropical mountainous jungle area, the terrain is complex, the roads are narrow, and the Vietnamese army simply cannot launch an attack of 6 regiments in front of 2 infantry battalions. Therefore, the argument of "one enemy with six" is a kind of erroneous exaggeration, which is to count the entire strength of the Vietnamese army on the head of the 119th Regiment, which is an unreasonable prejudice and disrespectful to history.

Although the exploits of the 119th Regiment are erroneous to say that "one enemy is six", this does not affect the achievements of the 119th Regiment. The 119th Regiment is the main regiment of the 14th Army, undertaking the main defense task of the Laoshan front, the regiment commander Zhang Youxia is a brave commander, he is in the line of fire, the commander of the soldiers stubbornly resisted, adopted the infantry blockade, artillery blockade tactics, and the Vietnamese army launched a fierce hand-to-hand combat. With the strong artillery support of the People's Liberation Army, the 119th Regiment killed a total of 1,370 Vietnamese soldiers, wounded 710 Vietnamese soldiers, captured 7 Vietnamese soldiers from morning to night, defeated the attack of 2 infantry regiments and 2 ** battalions of the Vietnamese army, kept the position in the direction of the bow of the ship, and made great contributions to thwarting the counterattack of the Vietnamese army.

This battle was a great victory in the Sino-Vietnamese War and a glorious demonstration of the PLA's battlefield in tropical mountains and jungles, demonstrating the PLA's heroic spirit and combat effectiveness. We should remember this history realistically, faithfully restore the truth of this battle, neither shrink nor exaggerate, and speak with facts, which is the greatest respect for heroes.
