An Indiana man was trapped in a wrecked truck and miraculously survived in the wild for six days using only rain, before being rescued after being found by two fishermen.
On December 20, Matt Reum's truck ran off Interstate 94 and crashed under a bridge in northwestern Indiana. The 27-year-old man was pinned down in his seat and unable to make a mobile phone. Luckily, two fishermen found him this Tuesday (December 26). Prior to that, Reum had spent six days trapped in a wrecked truck, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Indiana Sergeant Officer, Glen Fifield, said Reum is now in good spirits and he has been rescued and taken to the hospital for acceptance**.
Fifield told News Nation that it took a lot of effort for first responders to get Reum out of the wreckage of the truck.
It was a real challenge for the first responders and fire departments who went to the scene to get their equipment to the canyon, the creek area under the bridge, and get him out of his car. Fifield said.
Fifield said it was hard to say how long he would have lived if it hadn't been for the two fishermen who discovered Reum. "It really became a miracle!”
On Tuesday afternoon, Mario Garcia and his son-in-law, Nivardo Delatorre, were walking along Salt Creek near Portage, Indiana, looking for a good place to fish, CBS 2 reported.
But something shiny caught their attention, and it turned out to be a wrecked truck.
Garcia said he moved the white airbag in the cab of the truck and went to touch the driver, who he thought was dead. But the driver turned around and began to speak.
I was almost scared to death because it was kind of shocking. Garcia said Tuesday night, "But he's alive and he's very happy to see us." He was really happy, I had never seen anyone so relieved! The two immediately called 911 for Reum's help.
CBS 2 reported that as of Wednesday, Reum was awake and able to speak. He told the two fishermen who rescued him that he lived on the rain.
Dr. Emily Jameyfield of the Emergency Department at the University of Chicago School of Medicine said, "This person is very, very lucky. ”
Medical experts explain that people cannot survive for long without water. Dr. Jameyfield told CBS 2: "People don't have solid food and can survive for weeks to months; But without water, you can only survive for even a few days. ”
Earlier Wednesday, doctors amputated the middle tibia of Reum's left leg. Reum has multiple fractures and it will take some time to recover physically and mentally. As of Wednesday evening, his condition remained critical.
Reum's friends say it will take him a few days to process what happened before revealing to the world how he survived.
