When getting a new watch, we are usually Xi to understand it by observing the functions on the dial, but the functions on the dial alone cannot obtain important information about the watch, such as the material of the watch, waterproof and other characteristics. This information is usually engraved in English on the dial, case back, and movement.
As long as you can understand the English on the watch, your understanding of this watch will be twice as effective with half the effort. Today, we're going to take you through six English logos that are commonly found on watches, and by understanding these words, you can confidently claim to be a true watch connoisseur.
First, let's look at Automatic. In English, the word means "automatic". When it appears on a watch, it means that it is an automatic watch. You can find this logo just above the 6 o'clock position on the dial, and if the watch has a transparent case back, you will be able to see the logo part of the automatic watch: the oscillating weight.
Next is chronometer, which means chronometer in Chinese. The English logo on the watch means that it is a chronometer certified (COSC) watch. COSC is the abbreviation of the Official Chronometer Testing Agency of Switzerland. The movement is sent to the COSC for 16 days of testing, where it is tested daily for temperature, orientation and speed.
After passing this series of tests, the daily error is only -4 +6 seconds before the movement can be marked with chronometer on the dial of the finished watch. Of course, there are also more stringent certifications, such as Omega's Master Chronometer certification, which is approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas) and marked with the words "Master Chronometer" on the dial.
Then there is the chronograph, which translated into Chinese is stopwatch and chronograph. If you see this in English on the watch, it means that the watch is a chronograph. The dial of this watch resembles the instrument panel of a flying machine or racing car, with an independent chronograph of seconds. Some common brands such as IWC Portugal, Rolex Daytona, etc., have adopted this design.
GMT is an abbreviation for Greenwich Mean Time, which is a time measurement system based on the rotation of the Earth. This is usually found on the watch along with a GMT hand to indicate the local time. It can record the time in two or more places, so it has become the first choice for workplace elites who travel all year round.
The words water resistant and water proof indicate that the watch is water-resistant. This is followed by a number (e.g. 50m) indicating the depth of water resistance. Nowadays, some brands prefer to use ATM and bar, both of which are pressure units, such as 10ATM or 10bar, which means that the watch can withstand the pressure of 100 meters underwater.
Finally, let's take a look at all stainless steel. Literally translated, it means "all stainless steel". If there is this English on the back of the watch, it means that the entire case is made of stainless steel. If only the case back is made of stainless steel, then the English logo should be stainless steel back.
By understanding these six common watch logos, you'll be able to get a lot of important information about your watch without having to spend time playing around with it or looking up details.
