The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2023 released on June 22 showed that Japan's University of Tokyo and Kyoto University both slipped in the rankings, while Tsinghua University, Peking University and the National University of Singapore remained in the top three for the fourth consecutive year.

The rankings are based on 13 indicators for 669 universities in 31 countries and regions in Asia.

Japan has the largest number of universities with 117, of which six are in the top 100, down from eight last year.

There is a growing trend of declining university rankings in Japan.

In addition to the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Osaka University, Nagoya University, and Tokyo Institute of Technology are in the top 100 in 2023, while 8 Japanese universities are in the top 100 in 2022 and 14 in 2020.

According to Times Higher Education, Japan's overall ranking is on a downward trend, under pressure from China's rapid development.

However, with the support of internationalization policies, Japanese universities still have a bright future.

Chinese mainland ranked first with 95 universities and India ranked second with 75.

Chinese mainland has the most universities in the top 100, with 31, South Korea has 11 and India has 4.

Overall, the Asian University Rankings show a gradual increase in the number of universities in Chinese mainland and India, a downward trend in the overall ranking of Japanese universities, and a solid position in Chinese mainland at the top of the rankings.

This result has aroused widespread attention and discussion, and has caused a certain shock in the academic and educational circles.

For Japanese universities, how to cope with the rapid development of higher education in Chinese mainland and India is an urgent problem to be considered and solved.
