Domestic memory chips have made breakthroughs, and LPDDR5 memory has been released, but it is still several years behind Samsung.
Although memory chips are not as popular as CPUs, GPUs, SoCs, etc., memory chips are the most numerous products in the semiconductor industry, accounting for more than one-third of all chips.
There are many types of memory chips, such as DRAM memory, NAND flash memory, flash memory, etc., but DRAM + NAND accounts for more than 95% of the share, which are the two types with the largest number and share.
In recent years, memory chips have accounted for more than one-third of China's imports from abroad.
Before 2017, China had no capacity to manufacture DRAM and NAND flash memory, and relied on imports. Later, three major memory chip bases were born, with YMTC focusing on NAND flash memory and Changxin focusing on DRAM memory. As for Fujian Jinhua, the project is currently at a standstill.
YMTC's NAND flash memory is very powerful, I think many people know that last year, the world's first mass production of 232 layers of 3DNAND, is more important than Micron, Samsung, etc., according to ** report, this is China's first chip technology, more than Europe, America, Japan and South Korea manufacturers.
However, later the United States intervened and suppressed the Yangtze River Storage, which still has a very big impact on long-term storage.
Some time ago, another domestic memory chip manufacturer, Sunshine Result, officially launched the LPDDR5 series of DRAM products, including 12GBLPDDR5 chips in POP packaging and 6GBLPDDR5 chips in DSC packaging.
LPDDR5 is actually a type of DDR5 product, but it is a low-power DRAM memory that is mainly used in mobile phones, tablets, and other portable consumer electronics.
This LPDDR product accounts for about half of the market of all DRAM products, as sales of mobile phones, tablets, and other portable consumer electronics are very high today.
Now, mobile phones and tablets are using more advanced LPDDR5 products, and Changxin Storage can only produce LPDDR4 before, relatively late, so domestic mobile phone manufacturers, mainly Micron, SK hynix and Samsung, do not use domestic products.
However, now that Changxin has launched LPDDR5 products, it is possible to obtain domestic alternatives, so Changxin also said that it has successfully completed the onboard verification with domestic mobile phone brand models such as Xiaomi and Chuangyan.
Obviously, many domestic mobile phones will use Changxin's memory for domestic substitution.
Chinese smartphones, which account for 60% of the global market share, and Chinese tablets, which account for 40%+ of the world's share, will they reduce imports if these domestic products use Changxin's memory?
However, although Changxin memory has taken the lead, we still have to face the gap, because Samsung mass-produced the world's first 12GblPDDR5 mobile DRAM in July 2019, counting Changxin's delay of 4 years.
So although we have made a breakthrough, we still have to keep a low profile, after all, compared with foreign manufacturers, Changxin's storage still has a gap, and we still need to work hard.
