Obituary. Professor Li Qiang, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a famous sociologist, a senior professor of liberal arts at Tsinghua University, and former dean of the School of Social Sciences, died in Beijing at 14:19 on December 12, 2023, at the age of 73. The passing of Professor Li Qiang is a great loss to Tsinghua University, as well as to the Chinese academic community.
The farewell ceremony for Professor Li Qiang's body is scheduled to be held at 9 a.m. on December 16, 2023 at the Babaoshan Funeral Home in Beijing. The life of Professor Li Qiang.
Professor Li Qiang was born in May 1950 in Beijing, China. He graduated from Beijing No. 4 Middle School in 1968 and went to Heilongjiang Production and Construction Corps to participate in labor in the same year. In 1978, he entered the Department of International Politics of the Chinese University of China, and after graduating with a master's degree in 1985, he stayed on to teach, and later served as the head of the Department of Sociology. In September 1999, he was transferred to Tsinghua University to work in charge of the reconstruction of the Department of Sociology of Tsinghua University, and served as the first head of the department. In 2003, he served as the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Tsinghua University, and in 2012, he served as the first Dean of the School of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University, and in 2018, he was selected as one of the first batch of senior professors of liberal arts at Tsinghua University.
Professor Li Qiang is an important founder of the discipline of sociology in China in the new era, and a leader in the research fields of social stratification and mobility, urbanization and urban studies, and social governance. He emphasized empirical research based on first-hand data, insisted that sociology should be the "true" problem of Chinese society, and academic research should truly serve the people. Professor Li Qiang is one of the earliest sociologists in China to preside over and carry out a national large-sample survey, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of quantitative sociology in China. At the beginning of the 21st century, on the basis of data analysis and objective and comprehensive empirical observation, Professor Li Qiang proposed the "inverted T-shaped" structure of Chinese society, and later proposed the "earth-shaped" social structure according to the actual changes in the social structure, laying a solid theoretical foundation for the study of social stratification in China. In 2013, Professor Li Qiang proposed "people-centered" urbanization, believing that urbanization is not simply a problem of urban construction and development, but also a problem of people, and urbanization is to serve people. In 2014, Professor Li Qiang launched the "New Qinghe Experiment", went deep into the front line, devoted himself to research, created new ideas and new paths for grassroots social governance research, and became a successful example of social governance research in the new era.
Professor Li Qiang has devoted his life to national education and social undertakings. He has won honorary titles and awards such as "National Model Teacher", "Beijing Outstanding Teacher", "Tsinghua University Outstanding Contribution Award", "* Special Allowance Expert" and so on. He has served as the president of the Chinese Sociological Association, the president of the Beijing Sociological Society, the convener of the Sociology Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degree Committee, a member of the Social Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, a member of the National Informatization Expert Advisory Committee, a consultant of the Policy Advisory Expert Group of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, a member of the Policy and Management Research Expert Committee of the Ministry of Health, and a member of the National Social Science Evaluation Group. He is the author of more than 20 books, including "Social Stratification and the Gap between the Rich and the Poor", "Migrant Workers and China's Social Stratification", "Ten Lectures on Social Stratification", "Diversified Urbanization and China's Development", "Social Stratification in Contemporary China", and "Xinqinghe Experiment".
Professor Li Qiang is an honest and humble person, respectful of learning, wise and elegant, diligent and pragmatic, high-spirited and upright, and has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the discipline of sociology in China with the attitude of a gentleman and a good teacher.
