On December 23, at the 2024 Global Times Annual Conference with the theme of "Chinese-style Modernization, Breaking the Century-old Changes", experts and scholars discussed the topic of "Population, Industry and Market: The Underlying Logic of Chinese-style Modernization".
Lu Jiehua, professor of the Department of Sociology of Peking University, pointed out in his speech that in the process of promoting Chinese-style modernization, China's population and national conditions have undergone a turning point, and the emergence of characteristics such as declining birthrate, aging population, and regional population increase and decrease will inevitably have an impact on social and economic development.
How to solve this major change in the Chinese population?Lu Jiehua believes that first of all, we should change the mindset of China's young society in terms of thinking, and secondly, we should fully stimulate the vitality and motivation of the population. In this regard, Lu Jiehua said, "I don't think the various measures to encourage childbirth are enough. It must be 'all elements' to promote. Emphasis should be placed not only on childbirth, parenting, and education, but also on pension, medical care, and even employment. ”
In addition, Lu Jiehua believes that China must rely on the qualitative demographic dividend to promote economic development and support the realization of Chinese-style modernization to achieve a breakthrough in the national situation of population.
Finally, Lu Jiehua believes that we should not only see the challenges faced by the current national conditions of the Chinese population, but also see the opportunities in them. He said, "China is in the process of rapid urbanization, and the 'Seven Census' data shows that China still has 3The 7.6 billion floating population accounts for as much as 1.4 percent of the Chinese population. I think this is a huge driving force for China's social and economic development. Promoting the urbanization of these populations and providing them with more basic social public services will have a positive effect on the development of the Chinese population. ”
