The new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict has escalated, the impact of the war has spilled over to neighboring countries, the Israeli army has continued to carry out bombing, and more than 20,000 civilians have died in the Gaza Strip, most of them women and children.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also revealed that in the two and a half months since the outbreak of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, more than 136 UN staff members in Gaza have been killed by Israeli bombing. It can be seen that the so-called "right of self-defense" in Israel's mouth is nothing more than a tyrannical act of killing.
Fortunately, Israel's atrocities are not accepted by the international community, and with the exception of a few Western bloc countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which support Israel, most countries have condemned and spurned all military actions under the guise of doing so, and have made efforts to alleviate the grave humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and to achieve a long-term ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.
Finally, the hard work paid off, and the UN Security Council finally came out with good news.
The UN Security Council voted again and adopted Resolution 2720 with 13 votes in favor, 0 against and 2 abstentions, calling for immediate measures to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip and create conditions for a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.
It is worth noting that China, the United States and Russia, which have attracted much attention, China voted in favor, while the United States and Russia unanimously abstained.
Russia's abstention is understandable, as the United States also vetoed an amendment proposed by Russia that called for a return to the "suspension of hostilities" language in the original draft, even before the vote on the resolution. This means that Russia has been targeted by the United States, and whether it is in favor or against it, it will be criticized, so it simply chooses to abstain.
The choice of the United States to abstain from voting is indeed somewhat surprising. Since the outbreak of the new round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the United States has been stirring up trouble in the Security Council, obstructing the adoption of the cease-fire resolution, and supporting Israel's so-called "right of self-defense." This is also the fundamental reason why Israel dares to act recklessly in the Gaza Strip.
But during the Security Council's initiation of the resolution, the camera also captured a scene of great significance: Linfield, the US permanent representative to the United Nations, who had been bowing his head, was about to cast a vote of approval during the vote, but was pressed down by a female employee next to him.
Some people believe that this is a double reed sung by the United States in order to whitewash its "freedom," "democracy," and "human rights" in order to show that the United States respects humanitarianism, but for some reason it has to give it up, and this not only ignores the relevant moral responsibility of the United States to support Israel, but also makes the outside world sympathize with the United States and give up the idea of isolating the United States
Some people believe that this is the main manifestation of the fierce internal struggle in the United States, and that any decision made by the United States needs to be in line with the interests of the United States, and that voting in favor will make Israel, the only remaining ally in the Middle East, worse off, so even if some people think that it should be approved, the United States' own interests will not allow it.
Therefore, the wording of the draft resolution on "hostilities" and "monitoring assistance" was forced to be revised, and the words "calling for a ceasefire" were deleted, and only humanitarian supplies and aid were brought into Gaza, in exchange for the United States to abstain from voting.
However, in the eyes of Israel, the US move is tantamount to a "backstab" to Israel.
Allowing humanitarian supplies and safe access to Gaza is a "capital enemy" for the Israeli army, and in the context of being besieged from seven sides, Israel's 300,000 troops are forced to deploy 100,000 troops on the Lebanese-Israeli border, and 100,000 people are also needed to carry out drone and missile defense missions throughout Israel, and the remaining 100,000 are the main forces attacking Gaza.
Although Hamas cannot defeat Israel head-on, it has caused more than 5,000 Israeli troops to fight through guerrilla warfare and street fighting, and the Israeli army's operations on the opposite side are frequently blocked, and it is already facing great pressure. Now, in order not to be isolated by the whole world, the United States has chosen to protect itself, and it seems that it is still standing for Israel, but in fact it has begun to retreat.
Of course, the United States will not give up on Israel, after all, this conflict itself is an opportunity for the United States to return to the Middle East, and losing the war will not only cost Israel a heavy price, but the United States will also be dragged off the military altar, and the hegemony of the petrodollar will not be guaranteed. This is also where the United States contradicts itself, and let us wait and see what the future trend of the Palestinian-Israeli situation will be.
