The main logic board sends power commands to the Bongo Haptic Engine, which uses electromagnetic fields to generate vibrations, which then generate haptic feedback, and a slight upward movement towards the finger mimics the feeling of a physical button being pressed. The assembly has two strain gauges, one on each side of the button, and the strain gauge detects changes in pressure and converts them into changes in resistance within the circuit. A change in resistance results in a change in voltage, and the potential difference between the two strain gauges is used to determine the position of the pressure origin (volume increase or volume decrease).
Apple originally planned to use it on the iPhone 15 Pro series models, but it was canceled earlier this year due to a number of technical issues. Apple has not continued to delve into the project internally, and Apple's iPhone 16 models will still have mechanical buttons.
