Iberdrola ESPA A has received environmental approval for Spain's first hybrid photovoltaic and hydroelectric power plant. Publish an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in the Official State Gazette (BOE). The project, called Hidro Cedillo, is located in Cedillo (Extremadura) and has an installed capacity of 864 megawatts (MW) with over 160,000 photovoltaic modules and fixed structures.
Mixing optimizes the use of the grid and minimizes the environmental impact of the project's location. By employing two technologies that are able to be used interchangeably, it is possible to significantly reduce dependence on changing environmental conditions and constraints due to possible lack of resources such as wind or sunlight, thus promoting more stable and efficient renewable energy production.
The company recently announced that it will also build Spain's first wind-solar hybrid power plant in Burgos, and will invest in this technology in the country in the coming years, with the aim of improving its renewable resources and making the most of existing sites.
Hybrid power plants use the same grid connection points and share infrastructure, such as substations and evacuation lines for power generation. In addition, they are located on land that has been used for renewable energy generation and allow shared roads and facilities to run both technologies. All this has a much lower environmental impact than two independent plants, which reinforces Iberdrola ESPA's leadership in the field of innovation and renewable energy in Spain.
