Usage of the WEEKDAY function in Excel

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-01-30

The weekday function in Excel is used to return a number that indicates what day of the week a certain day is. This number ranges from 1 to 7, where 1 represents Sunday, 2 represents Monday, and so on, with 7 representing Saturday.

Here's how to use the weekday function:

Open the excel workbook and enter the formula into the cell.

Enter in the formula"weekday("and select the date cell for which you want to find the day of the week.

Press Enter after the closing parenthesis to return the numeric number of the week for that date.

For example, if you want to enter a formula in cell B2, find out what day of the week the date in cell A2 is, you can enter the following formula in cell B2:

weekday(a2)"

After pressing the Enter key, the B2 cell will return the day of the week number corresponding to the date in the B2 cell.

Note: The weekday function can also accept an optional second argument that specifies the type of day of the week number to be returned. For example, if the second parameter is 1, the returned week digits are numbers from 1 to 7; If the second parameter is 2, the returned number of the week is a number from 0 to 6; If the second parameter is 3, the number of the week returned is a number from 1 to 7, but 0 is returned on Sunday.
