According to 9to5mac local time on December 16, Apple, payment institution Visa, and Mastercard were named in an antitrust class action lawsuit. The three companies are accused of conspiring to monopolize point-of-sale payment services, resulting in higher fees for credit and debit card transactions. The charges allege that Apple reached an agreement with MasterCard and Visa to allow the two companies to run Apple Pay on the POS transaction payment network. In exchange, Visa and Mastercard allow Apple to take a cut of transaction fees. By striking this deal, Visa and Mastercard made a "very large and persistent cash bribe" to Apple. The allegations also mention that Apple has banned other companies from using the iPhone's NFC chip for contactless payment transactions, meaning that Apple Pay is the only mobile wallet platform available on the iPhone. Earlier this week, Apple was proposing to open up the iPhoneNFC system used by Apple Pay in response to the European Commission's investigation into potential antitrust practices by Apple Pay. But it remains to be seen whether this will actually happen, and whether this change will also apply to the United States.
