On the construction site, time seems to stand still. The daily work is repetitive and boring, and we spend most of our lives wearing overalls and carrying tools, and the sound of concrete and iron and steel colliding. For many of us, the construction site has become a second home, and sometimes even more than home.
However, when a college classmate suddenly asked me if I would stay on a construction site for the rest of my life, I got into thinking. To be honest, I don't know how long I'll last. This may be a difficult problem that every engineer has to face.
I recall the moment I first joined a high-speed rail project in the South. Although the project is nearing completion, I still follow my master around the construction site every day.
My master is the deputy director of our project engineering department, he graduated from a college in Xi'an, he is tall, swarthy, and has been working on the construction site for seven or eight years. I am grateful to him because he took good care of me and made me feel warm and at ease on the construction site.
Once, we went to inspect the foundation of the bearing platform, and the supervisor signaled me to go down and take a few photos. I hesitated because the pit was full of muddy water and there was no ladder for me to use. However, before I could answer, my master had already jumped into the pit quickly. He said, "My apprentice has just arrived, so I'll go down and have a look." ”
That day, we were busy for most of the afternoon, until it was already past six o'clock, and I was a little embarrassed to propose to invite the master to dinner. However, the master firmly disagreed, saying that I should save the salary I had just gotten, but he invited me.
After we had a brief wash, he drove me to town with the chief engineer of the project. Cities in the south are especially lively at night, with people dressed brightly and bustling in front of malls and food stalls.
We found a noodle restaurant and everyone ordered a bowl of ramen. While waiting for the meeting, the chief engineer jokingly said to me that we really don't fit in in this city, and if we don't enter the city for a long time, we will become dirt buns.
The chief engineer is also from Shaanxi and joined the company just after graduation. He came to Jiangnan from the northwest, and he has been working hard and conscientious about the project. The three of us are considered fellow villagers, and that night, my master and chief engineer told me a lot of life experiences. They told me that young people have to work hard, learn more, and save enough money. After all, there are always more places in life where money is needed.
Later, I didn't see the chief engineer for a long time before I realized that he had decided to leave his job. He found a new job in Xi'an, and although he is still a construction company, it is closer to home, so he can often go home to visit his parents.
At our casual dinner, the master and I drank with the chief engineer. The chief engineer choked up and said to us: "Brothers, this time I am a deserter. I wanted to finish this project with everyone, but I was old and didn't have a family yet, and my parents were in a hurry. I can't be on the construction site for the rest of my life. ”
He threw himself up and drank a glass of white wine. We all drank a little too much that night.
This is the first time I've seen a colleague on a project resign, and my heart flutters slightly. In the afternoon of the next day, the chief engineer quietly left without informing anyone. The plastering colleagues are still working on the construction site, the acceptance work is carried out as usual, and the canteen provides meals on time. It's as if nothing had happened.
Less than two weeks later, a new chief engineer arrived. I saw that the badge of the former chief engineer was thrown into the trash, as if to prove that he had paid for this project and dedicated his youth to our unit for nearly ten years!
This incident made me think about it for a long time. I asked the master, we have been working for ten years, and we are still in the position of chief engineer, why do we have to leave?
The master didn't give me a direct answer, just said that slowly you will understand.
Every time I go to the construction site, after the end, some colleagues will say, "Let's go home." "At first, I couldn't understand how the project department could be called "home"How can an office space on a construction site, plus a staff dormitory, be a "home"?
However, as time went on, I slowly understood. Some have shed their guilt and guilt about their families, and they have reconciled with themselves and found a sense of belonging on the construction site. For them, the construction site is home.
As I worked on multiple projects and came into contact with more and more people, I began to learn more about civil engineering and the construction site. After the project ended, I changed project after project, place after place. Contact with the master gradually became scarce, only to know that he also left later.
The construction site itself is a big society, and I gradually Xi got used to the turnover of people, and understood that those who leave are not necessarily cowards, and those who stay on the construction site are also brave.
As for whether I will leave the construction company or this industry in the future, I dare not make a decision easily. But I knew that one day, I would leave this site for construction. After all, life is not only about what is in front of us, but also poetry and distance await us.
Civil engineering brothers, tell me!Are you really going to work on a construction site for the rest of your life?
