At the end of each year, many countries select the word of the year to reflect their perception of the year.

On December 8, local time, a panel of German linguists announced that "crisis mode" would become Germany's word of the year in 2023.

The German Association of Germany explains that the "crisis mode" contains public anxiety about multiple crises such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, climate change, inflation, etc.

The agency said that "there are always crises", but now it seems that there are "too many crises", and "crises" have even become "the norm".

The association also cites the real estate crash in Europe and the deterioration of the country's education system, which "nerves up Germans."

Not only that, but Germany has also been feeling the pressure of fiscal problems lately.

In November, Germany's Constitutional Court ruled against the use of special funds for industrial projects and welfare, among other measures, and the joint budget plan was torn up. Since then, there have been discussions about whether to cut billions of dollars in spending or suspend the "debt brake" mechanism for the fifth consecutive year next year. And the latter, according to the Constitution, can be carried out only in an emergency.

Uncertainty, fear, anger, helplessness and feelings of powerlessness pervade the daily lives of many people, the German Association said in a statement.

Between apathy and alarmism, it is difficult to find an appropriate way to deal with the current exceptional situation. ”
