A brief description of the method of yarrow into a hexagram in the Book of Changes

There are many different versions of the introduction to the method of forming hexagrams in the Book of Changes, the oldest of which is the Zhou Yi. The introduction of "Dictionaries" uses 50 yarrow to decompose and evolve into a hexagram many times.

The ancient text reads as follows:

"The number of Dayan is fifty, and there are nine out of forty. Divided into two to like two, hanging one to like three, to four to like four, attributed to the strange to the like leap, five years old and then leap, so then hanging. ”

Because this text is a long time ago, the introduction is relatively concise, many people can't understand it, and now it is briefly described as follows based on the interpretation of the predecessors.

The number of the Great Yan is a relatively complete calculation method, using 50 yarrows, but the ones that really work are 49. For example, take 50 yarrows, take out 1 root, and use 49 roots for hexagrams.

Divide into 2 portions at random to symbolize the two rituals of heaven and earth.

For example, 49 is divided into two parts, 18 and 31.

Take out 1 root of yarrow in the back to represent people, so that the three talents of heaven, earth and man are complete.

Example: In the above example, the number of days is 18 and the number of places is 31. Take out 1 of the 31 numbers of the land to symbolize people, and the number of places becomes 30, so that the three talents of heaven, earth and man will be possessed.

4 yarrow sticks are taken out of each group, and these 4 yarrow roots represent the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter.

For example, the number of days is 18-4=14, and the number of places is 30-4=26.

Take out yarrow in groups of 4 from the number of days and the number of places in a row, and put aside the remainder to symbolize the leap month.

For example, if the number of days is 18, the remainder is 2 after dividing by 4, and the remainder is 2 after dividing the number of places 30 by 4. These remainders symbolize leap months.

There are about two leap months in five years, i.e. two remainders.

Example: In the above example, both remainders are 2. Different divisions may have other remainders, such as 1 and 3, 4 and 4. If you are interested, you can deduce and verify.

At this point, the first change has evolved, and then the second change is deduced according to the above method. The second change is to use yarrow with the number of heaven and earth after removing the remainder.

As in the above example, after removing the two remainders, the number of heaven and earth is added to the 44 roots, and the 44 yarrow is randomly divided into two groups to represent the number of heaven and earth, such as 26 and 18, take out one of the 18 roots of the earth to symbolize people, and then use four to resemble four times.

The resulting remainders are 2 days and 1 land. This completes the second change.

Next, the third change is made. After removing the remainder, the total number of yarrow in heaven and earth is 40, which is randomly divided into two groups, such as 19 and 21, and takes 1 from the number of places to elephant man, and pulls it to four to elephant four.

The number of days is 3, the number of places is 4, and the third change is completed.

Next, the third change is made. After removing the remainder, the total number of yarrow in heaven and earth is 40, divided into two groups, such as 19 and 21, take 1 from the number of places to elephant man, and take four to elephant four. The number of days is 3, the number of places is 4, and the third change is completed.

After the completion of the three changes, all the remainders are removed, and there are still 32 remaining in the number of heaven and earth. So far, the first line has been formed.

According to this method, there will be four situations after the result of the three changes: 36, 32, 28, 24.

Divide the above numbers by 4 to get: 9, 8, 7, 6. Among them, 9 is Lao Yang (change 爻), 8 is Shao Yin, 7 is Shao Yang, and 6 is Lao Yin (Change 爻).

The above method is repeated six times, then the six lines are formed, the first line is at the bottom, the order is loaded, and the last line is on the top, so that the number of the great rays is completed.

The above is "Zhou Yi. It can be seen that the ancients were very particular about the method of forming a hexagram, not only to represent the three talents of heaven, earth and man, but also to consider the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, and also to consider the factor of leap month.
