On December 12, local time, the 10th emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly was convened and a resolution was adopted by an overwhelming vote, demanding an immediate ceasefire between the two sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In his speech before the vote, President Francis of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly said that the current humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating rapidly, and that what all parties are seeing is an attack on the people, a humanitarian breakdown and a grave contempt for international law and international humanitarian law. He called for a halt and for a political settlement to continue to drag on as long as violence exists.

The draft resolution on the situation in new Gaza, co-sponsored by Arab countries, was co-sponsored by more than 100 countries, including China.

Before the vote, the General Assembly first voted on two amendments from Austria and the United States. The Austrian amendment received 89 votes in favour, 61 against and 20 abstentionsThe U.S. amendment received 84 votes in favor, 62 against, and 25 abstentions. Neither amendment was adopted because it failed to obtain a two-thirds majority of valid votes.

Subsequently, the General Assembly voted on the draft resolution on the situation in new Gaza, jointly sponsored by Arab countries, in which 153 countries were in favor of it, 23 countries abstained, and 10 countries, including Israel and the United States, opposed it. The draft resolution was adopted by a two-thirds majority. The resolution calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire;Reiterates its call on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, in particular the protection of civilians;Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and ensure humanitarian access.
