In the latest edition of The Edge, Future Electronics introduced STMicroelectronics' STSPIN32G4 motor controller.
STMicroelectronics' STSPIN32G4 is a highly integrated and flexible motor controller for driving three-phase brushless motors, enabling designers to select the most appropriate drive mode and reduce PCB area and overall BOM. It embeds a triple half-bridge gate driver capable of driving power MOSFETs with a current capability of 1 A (sink and source). There are three embedded bootstrap diodes inside the motor controller. There are a number of protection features to shut down all outputs in case of overvoltage or overdrive. The STSPIN32G4 is fully self-powered thanks to its integrated flexible power management architecture that generates all required power from the only externally supplied motor supply voltage VM. An embedded programmable buck regulator with embedded power MOSFETs generates the supply voltage of the gate driver from the motor supply voltage VM. It embeds a triple half-bridge gate driver capable of driving power MOSFETs with a current capability of 1 A (sink and source).
The device also embeds three bootstrap diodes. Due to the integrated interlock function, the high-side and low-side switches of the same half of the bridge cannot be driven high at the same time. Another protection feature is a hardware VDS supervisory circuit, which continuously monitors six external MOSFETs and shuts down all gate driver outputs if an overvoltage is detected on one of them.
The overvoltage threshold can be set via the dedicated scref pin.
Four different VCC output values can be selected via dedicated configuration registers: 8V (default values V, 12V, and 15V.)
The motor supply voltage is 55 V to 75 V
