At around 5 pm local time on the 29th, a "high-altitude throwing" incident occurred in a hotel near Times Square in New York, USA: two children threw glass wine bottles from the 32nd floor of the hotel, resulting in injuries to a 24-year-old woman.
The injured person was taken to hospital** and is currently in stable condition, the report said. According to sources, the two perpetrators, a 12-year-old and an 11-year-old, were staying in a hotel with their guardians. A 12-year-old will be charged with "recklessly endangering the safety of others", and an 11-year-old will not be charged because of his age.
The hotel involved. It is understood that Times Square has a large population flow and is known as the "crossroads of the world". When the glass bottle slammed into the ground, someone mistook it for gunshots, causing a brief panic, sources said. A law enforcement source explained that when an item falls from the 32nd floor, it does make a loud noise, "and I understand that people mistake that sound for gunshots." Another witness said the sound sounded like a ** sound.
A passer-by who was almost hit by a bottle said that throwing something down from such a high floor could really kill someone, "It's crazy to throw bottles from a high altitude." An employee at a nearby restaurant said he thought someone was trying to jump out of a window. Maria Vasketsova, 21, said that at the time, everyone was looking up, "I thought someone had committed suicide." Clichy Pierre, who worked in the parking lot opposite the hotel, recalled that the area was locked down for an hour, which made it impossible for many people to leave.
Just a few hours before the incident, Times Square held a "confetti rehearsal" to ensure that the moment the New Year's Eve bell rings, the confetti will fall from the air onto the streets. New York City Mayor Adams assured citizens that safety will be a top priority in New Year's celebrations. According to the report, the two children may also have been affected by the "throwing of color crumbs" before throwing glass bottles.
