While taking your dog out for a walk is essential to keep them healthy and energetic, some dog breeds are best off staying in a warm home when the temperature drops below a certain level.
It's important to note that it depends on the breed of dog you have.
Anyone who has seen dog breeds such as the Newfoundland Dog and the Bernese Mountain Dog refuse to enter the house when barked in the snow knows that these dogs love the cold.
But dog breeds like this are protected by a thick double coat of fur that is both warm and dry.
Of course, on the flip side, you have to take great care of these dogs on a hot summer day.
Lorna Winter, who co-founded the puppy training app Zippag, says smaller dogs and shorter fur dogs are more vulnerable to the cold during the winter months.
She said"If you need to wear a hat and scarf when you stand outside, then your puppy will most likely be cold as well.
If they are walking around, then exercise may keep them warm, but the pavement is cold and the puppy is close to it, so it will feel cold"。
She added:"Dog breeds that are more hardy (usually because they have thicker fur, double coats, or heavier skeletons) include Newfoundlands, Siberian Huskies, Tibetan Mastiffs, and Norwegian Deer Hounds.
Dog breeds with shorter coats and smaller sizes are less adaptable to cold weather. This includes Chihuahuas, whippets, and French bulldogs"。
Lorna also suggests that owners of dog breeds that are susceptible to cold can also buy them some clothes to help keep them warm.
Dog breeds with thin fur and small breeds can wear overcoats or onesies during the colder months.
Another good option is to buy a pair of shoes, which will protect your pet dog from cold ground, gravel, or antifreeze.
If the temperature drops below -5 degrees Celsius, it's best to give up walking your dog and wait for the weather to warm up.
If your dog shiveres or shivers, it's too cold. They may also be looking for a source of heat, and that could be you.
However, if your dog has to miss a walk one day, there are other ways to keep them entertained.
This can be by providing them with a wealth of activities at home to keep them excited.
