The God of War: Ragnarok DLC, released this week, has once again gained a wave of fans with its superior production quality and exploration of the new meat pigeon gameplay, and Kui Ye has written his own new story in Valhalla. Here, Kui Ye reconciled with his past self. The angry warrior at the beginning of the series is gone, replaced by the true god who is admired by the people.
As we all know, Santa Monica Studio rebooted the God of War series in 2018, and after slaughtering the ancient Greek gods, he settled down and married and had children. At the beginning of the story, his wife dies again, and Kui Ye embarks on a new journey with his son Atreus. Both sides have grown in the process and become more understanding of each other. Kui Ye's image has also changed to a "strict father".
The vast majority of players are receptive to these changes, and Santa Monica details Kuiye's transformation with two main works and a DLC. But there are also people who do not accept this change, as the game director of the original "God of War", D**ID Jaffe, who has the title of "God of War", recently shouted to the game's current creative director, Cory Barlog:
If you're planning to create a brand new IP, or you're planning to create a God of War related character that solves the problem you're facing, that's great, but don't call him (Kratos after the reboot) the God of War. ”
D**ID Jaffe admits that Kratos, the protagonist of God of War: Ragnarok, is not his cup of tea, and doesn't even think he's the same Kratos he created in the original. Admittedly, the shift in perspective adds more to the game. The game's transformation from the original ACT action genre to ARPG gameplay and the addition of the character of Atreus were good attempts, but he didn't accept them.
In other words, Kui Ye is not the kind of person who can live a life of "wife and children hot kang head", and the background color of "God of War" is the image of focusing on brutal battles and unleashing endless anger. Chinese players can understand it as the Monkey King, who escaped after being pressed by the Buddha for 500 years, and then brandished a golden hoop stick to hit the Lingxiao Hall and swept away the gods and Buddhas.
D**ID Jaffe's remarks were later known to Santa Monica's creative director Cory Barlog. He didn't reply to the text, but gave a gif emoji that he wanted to say and stopped. It is worth mentioning that this emoji from the classic drama "Lingshu Detective" itself has a version of Kuiye.
Regarding this incident, it is essentially a question of the concept of the two generations of "God of War" on the character creation of Kuiye. D**id Jaffe thinks he's supposed to be a character with an inexhaustible anger in his chest, who will never compromise and fight to the deathCory Barlog gave Kui Ye more human brilliance, which also affected the subsequent development of the story. But there's no doubt that both of them are successful characters in the history of gaming.
I don't know which version of Kui Ye you recognize more?
