Hello, I'm like a song of years za
Recently, news of Japan's plan to inscribe "calligraphy" (calligraphy in Japanese) on the World Heritage List has sparked widespread controversy. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, "calligraphy" is inseparable from traditional Japanese festivals and living culture, and became an intangible cultural heritage of Japan in 2021. The Japanese authorities will formally apply to UNESCO for intangible cultural heritage in March 2024, and the results will be announced around November 2026.
When you think about it, it's really ridiculous and generous.
Calligraphy, an art form with a long history, has played an important role in history. On September 30, 2009, UNESCO officially approved Chinese calligraphy as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". It is not only an important part of traditional Chinese culture, but also a treasure of world cultural heritage. However, in recent years, cultural institutions in some countries have begun to inscribe calligraphy on the World Heritage List, which has attracted widespread attention from the international community.
South Korea is an example of this. In 2005, South Korea successfully inscribed the Dragon Boat Festival on the World Heritage List. Although this traditional festival is the best in China, it has been well inherited by South Korea and is also one of the important cultural activities in East Asia. In addition, South Korea also successfully declared "traditional tug-of-war" and "acupuncture" in 2015 and 2019 respectively. These success stories have strengthened South Korea's determination to apply more traditional cultures to the World Heritage List.
It is worth noting that there are also some representatives of traditional Chinese culture that have been successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List by other countries. For example, Danqing and Confucian Academies have all been successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List by South Korea. This is undoubtedly a loss of culture, and it also makes us realize the importance of protecting and passing on traditional culture.
However, it has recently been reported that South Korea intends to apply for traditional Chinese festivals such as the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year's Eve. This news is very ludicrous. Spring Festival and Chinese New Year's Eve are one of the most important traditional festivals in China, and they are also cultural treasures that have been passed down by the Chinese people for thousands of years. To regard them as the cultural heritage of Korea is undoubtedly ignorance and contempt for Chinese culture.
In short, calligraphy, as an important part of traditional Chinese culture, should be better protected and inherited. At the same time, we should also be wary of other countries inscribed our cultural heritage on the World Heritage List in order to protect our cultural independence and integrity.
