Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound TCD See through your brain!

Mondo Health Updated on 2024-01-30

In daily life, there are many health problems that plague everyone. However, some problems are not paid enough attention, such as dizziness, headache, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, etc., which will aggravate blood vessel damage and lead to intracranial vascular lesions.

At this time, TCD examination can be used to carry out preventive intervention for high-risk groups to avoid serious consequences caused by cerebrovascular diseases.

What is TCD?

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) is a non-invasive examination method for cerebrovascular diseases that uses the ultrasound Doppler effect to detect the hemodynamic and physiological parameters of the main arteries at the base of the brain in the brain. The main principle is to use ultrasound through the skull to examine the intracranial arteries.

It is the preferred examination method for ischemic cerebrovascular disease, which has the advantages of non-invasive, inexpensive, reproducible, and good sensitivity and specificity compared with DSA.

The main clinical application scope of TCD.

01 Cerebral neck artery stenosis: including the location and degree of stenosis, and the compensation of collateral circulation.

02 Subclavian artery occlusive lesions and steal syndrome.

03Non-atherosclerotic cerebral artery stenosis, such as moyamoya disease (syndrome), Takayasu's arteritis, etc.

04 Cerebral vasospasm (especially monitoring of subarachnoid hemorrhage).

05 Foaming test: to diagnose right-to-left shunt, such as patent foramen ovale of the heart, suitable for patients with headache and cryptogenic stroke.

06 Cerebral arteriovenous malformation and arteriovenous fistula.

07Observation and follow-up review of the efficacy of cerebral and cervical artery stenosis or occlusion drugs or stents**.

Who is TCD suitable for.

Those with a family history of smoking, alcoholism, obesity, three highs and stroke;

Headache, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness.

Precautions for TCD testing.

1. This examination is the preferred examination method for ischemic cerebrovascular disease, which is non-invasive, inexpensive, reproducible, and harmless to the human body, and there is no need to fast before the examination;

2. Before the examination, please clean your face, do not use cosmetics and other skin care products, wash your hair, blow dry, and do not use hair care products, such as mousse, hairspray, gel water, etc.;

3. Try to wear low-necked loose clothes to expose the neck and shoulders;

Vasoconstrictors and vasodilators are contraindicated within hours;

5. Be quiet and relaxed during the inspection, do not call or answer the mobile phone, and avoid the interference of electromagnetic signals to the inspection;

6. Patients with carotid artery stents should take the initiative to inform the examining physician before examination;

7. Please bring the relevant imaging data of the patient's head, such as head MRL, contrast and previous ultrasound examination data for reference;
