The next-generation Mahindra Pik-Up can be supplied with an electric powertrain as well as a new 'Mhawk' diesel engine.

Mahindra revealed more details about its Global Pik-Up concept, as well as the features that will incorporate it into production models over the next three years, including cutting-edge technology, top-of-the-line safety, and the possibility of electrification.

The concept was unveiled earlier this year, sparking interest in Australia's massive two-seater pickup truck market and the prospect of a rugged one-tonne pickup truck that could compete with the established hotspots but be lower.

Mr Velusamy said those factors include the wheelbase, suspension structure and overhangs, as well as significantly different specifications depending on the specific use and application of the UTE compared to larger SUVs. However, its engine is "generally the same", with Mahindra's 2The 2-liter four-cylinder "Mhawk" alloy block diesel engine version is "about the same" and is available with a choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Mahindra says the new diesel engine can reach 450Nm, which is 10Nm more than the Scorpio, and the production version of the Pik-Up will outperform the current model across the board. It's unclear if the Pik-Up name will be retained, or if Mahindra will have a new nickname to celebrate its first new pickup in 16 years, and while Mr Velusamy said the exterior and interior design, architecture, and suspension layout are all complete, there's still a long way to go.

Much of the pre-launch work has been development and validation, including key crash tests and local tests that Mahindra says "need to be done in Australia", continuing the work the company has already done in Australia. Mr Velusamy said all was going well and that it was planned to be introduced to Australia in June 2026, but stressed that the model would not be launched until it was ready.

While the concept car showcases a number of rugged accessories, such as a gantry, lift suspension, cargo rails, luggage rails, and a sports body kit, Mr Velusamy said the company doesn't plan to launch a version that competes with high-performance one-ton models. For example, the Ford Ranger Raptor or the Volkswagen Amarok.
