According to Russia's Kommersant newspaper on December 27, Armenia is ready to make peace with Azerbaijan and lead the Eurasian Economic Union.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashnyan paid a two-day visit to Russia. During his visit, he shook hands with Azerbaijani Ilham Aliyev at the informal summit of the CIS in St. Petersburg on 26 July. According to sources, the two sides are still actively trying to reach a peace treaty, which is expected to be signed "shortly after the New Year". Pashinyan attended the Eurasian Economic Union summit on 25 July. In 2024, Armenia will assume the presidency of the alliance.
According to the report, due to Yerevan's special position on the integration organization of the former Soviet Union, and the lack of clarity on the issue of the conclusion of a peace treaty between the two countries, the Armenian leader's every move is particularly concerning. Pashinyan did not participate in the CSTO summit in Minsk in November. Prior to that, in October, he did not attend the Bishkek summit of the CIS summit.
Azerbaijan is not a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, so Aliyev did not participate in the summit of the alliance, but took part in the second event held on the 26th - the informal summit of the CIS to welcome the New Year. At the beginning of the meeting, the leaders of the two countries shook hands with each other.
Russia's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said: "There are no arrangements for bilateral talks at the moment, but everyone can talk to each other on the sidelines of the summit." His remarks were intended to imply that any improvisation by the leaders of the two countries in St. Petersburg was possible. (Compiled by Zhao Zhipeng).
