The United States once again vetoed the United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

On 8 December, the United Arab Emirates presented a draft calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, as well as "the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages" and "ensuring humanitarian access". The draft was endorsed by 97 countries, and the UAE drafted the bill co-sponsored. On the afternoon of December 8, the UN Security Council voted, and among the 15 members of the Security Council, 13 voted in favor, the United Kingdom abstained from voting, and the United States voted against. The United States exercised its veto power and the resolution was prevented.

As one of the five permanent members of the Security Council with veto power, the United States has repeatedly resisted calls for a "ceasefire" and stressed Israel's right to defend itself after the terrorist attacks in Hamas.

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, said: Thank you to the United States and Biden** for standing firmly on our side today and demonstrating their leadership and values. During this holiday season, a little light dispelled a lot of darkness.

The United Kingdom abstained from voting on the Security Council resolution, and the British representative to the United Nations said that he had abstained from voting because the draft did not condemn the atrocities committed by Hamas against innocent Israeli civilians.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Mansour issued a statement: calling it a "sad day", believing that one day "those who do not see reality" will finally respond to the enormous pressure on humanity, with billions of people on the planet demanding a ceasefire.

One detail worth noting is that before the UN Security Council meeting on Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, which is rare. Article 99 provides that the Secretary-General of the United Nations may bring to the attention of the Council any matter which, in his opinion, may threaten international peace and security. Since the founding of the United Nations, the Secretary-General has rarely invoked this provision, the first time since Guterres took office as UN Secretary-General in 2017, and the last time it was invoked by then-Secretary-General U Thant in 1971.

Under this pressure, Israel's *** Minister Cohen couldn't sit still and jumped out to accuse the UN Secretary-General, saying that Guterres "humiliated" his position, which is another example of the Secretary-General's bias against Israel.

And on the sidelines, Galari, the defense minister, claimed on Friday that the Israeli army had intensified its attacks on the north and south of the Gaza Strip, with about 450 targets in Gaza being attacked in the past day, and said he had seen signs that Hamas was at a point of collapse in Gaza.
