Recently, in the hematology ward of Wuhan Central Hospital affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhang Min (pseudonym), a 26-year-old doctoral student at Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, donated "seeds of life" to a post-90s leukemia patient in East China. His donation has fulfilled his dream of saving people for many years, and he said that in the future, he will embark on the road of medicine and treat diseases and save people to the end.

In October 2015, Zhang Min saw the promotion of hematopoietic stem cell donation on campus, so he and his classmates signed up for the Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donor database. In early September this year, he received a letter from a Red Cross staff member saying that he had been successfully matched with a patient with a blood disease and asked if he was willing to donate. Zhang Min agreed without the slightest hesitation. On September 20, Zhang Min received a physical examination notice in mid-November through remobilization and high-resolution matching, and finally confirmed that he met the donation requirements.

It is understood that Zhang Min is a native of Xiangyang, Hubei, and Zhang Min has been determined to be a doctor when he grows up. During the college entrance examination, he volunteered to fill in all the medical majors, and was later admitted to the School of Medicine of Sun Yat-sen University, and is now a 2023 doctor of medicine at Tongji Medical College affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

When I was in college, I joined the Red Cross Society of Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine as a Red Cross volunteer, and I like to participate in activities organized by the Red Cross. Zhang Min said that it has always been his dream to treat diseases and save people, and although he has not yet become a doctor, he has realized his dream by donating hematopoietic stem cells, which has strengthened his choice.

When Min Zhang was still studying for his Ph.D., this stage was also the most critical moment, he was busy doing experiments in the laboratory every day, and he was busy until late. At this time, the progress of the experiment was suspended due to the decision to donate hematopoietic stem cells. Although the experiment was very important, in the face of another life's call for help, Zhang Min still chose to save people. "After donating, if my body can, I will return to the laboratory as soon as possible, I think Jiren has his own natural appearance, and I have helped others, and my luck will not be too bad. The teachers and classmates in the hospital are very nice and will help me if I have any difficulties. ”

For patients with severe blood diseases, life is a race between matching probability and survival time. As a medical student, Zhang Min said that he has also been in contact with some patients with blood diseases in his clinical practice, and he was impressed by the low survival rate of patients. Therefore, after hearing the news of the successful matching, he quickly expressed his willingness to donate.

During the donation process, Zhang Min found that compared with blood donation, the collection of hematopoietic stem cells takes longer and takes more steps, but in his opinion, these efforts are insignificant compared to saving lives. ”

When asked why he chose to apply for the medical profession in the first place, Zhang Min said that "because he thinks that being a doctor is a profession that can help others", and the most important criterion for a good doctor in his mind is "excellent medical skills", because "only in this way can we really help patients".

Based on the double-blind principle of donation, although Zhang Min has been connected with the patient by blood, he is always the hero behind the scenes. As a medical student, he practiced the noble professional spirit of "respecting life, saving lives, dedication, and boundless love" with courage and kindness, and also set an example for more college student volunteers to join the hematopoietic stem cell donation team, demonstrating the power of role models. After learning the news of Zhang Min's donation of hematopoietic stem cells, the students in the laboratory also expressed their desire to join the hematopoietic stem cell volunteer team.

After four hours of collection, the stem cell suspension successfully donated by Zhang Min on the same day will be sent to the patient's hospital by the specialist. Zhang Min became the 614th case in Hubei Province and the 16,561st case in the country as a hematopoietic stem cell donor.

Donating hematopoietic stem cells is the overlap of love and life, an encounter of fate, and a two-way luck. Endless distances, countless people, all related to me. Zhang Min hopes that his actions can be like a dandelion, standing in the warm sun, and the gentle wind will sow small seeds farther away, so that the hope of life can take root in the hearts of more patients.
