At the end of 1944, a group of cultural, educational, and natural science scholars, in order to strive for victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and political democracy, inherit and carry forward the anti-imperialist, patriotic, and democratic scientific spirit of the May Fourth Movement, with the support of the Communist Party of China and the anti-Japanese national united front policy, initiated a democratic science symposium in Chongqing.
On September 3, 1945, in order to commemorate the great victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the Democratic Science Symposium was renamed the Jiusan Symposium, and on May 4, 1946, a conference was held to rename the Jiusan Society.
The successive chairmen of Jiusan Society** are Xu Deheng, Zhou Peiyuan, Wu Jieping, Han Qide, and the current chairman Wu Weihua.
As of June 30, 2023, there are 30 provincial-level organizations, 282 districted city and city-level organizations, 29 county-level organizations, 7,874 grassroots organizations, and 211738 members. Among the members, 120004 have senior professional titles, accounting for 56 of the total number of members7%, including 65 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
