This news surprised General Chen Geng, and he said in horror: "If I didn't have this leg, how could I walk normally and lead my troops to fight?" Despite the risk of amputation, General Chen Geng remained strong and complained loudly about the enemy in the hospital, knowing that losing a leg would mean that he would not be able to move as vigorously as before, and might even kill him.
Under the careful care of Dr. Fu Lianzhang, General Chen Geng was able to save his leg in the end, although the conservative process was painful. When he was discharged from the hospital, he thanked the doctor and promised to give him a birthday every year.
