Ke Wenzhe promised that after being elected, he might imitate Chiang Ching kuo and resume exchanges

With less than a month to go before Taiwan's regional elections, the competition between candidates Lai Ching-de, Hou You-yi and Ko Wen-zhe has intensified. The three candidates have resorted to all kinds of tactics to win voter support. Among them, the use of mainland sentiment is particularly eye-catching, and all parties are competing on the mainland issue.

Hou Youyi of the Kuomintang showed a relatively moderate and friendly attitude towards the mainland in the early days of the election campaign. In contrast, Lai Qingde of the People's Party and Ke Wenzhe of the People's Party have also recently undergone subtle changes in their attitudes towards the mainland, and they have expressed their views on the mainland. With less than a month left before the election, Lai Ching-te declared that if he is elected leader of the Taiwan region, the probability of a conflict between the two sides of the strait will be minimal. Ko Wenzhe also said that if elected, he would follow the example of Chiang Ching-kuo, the former leader of the Taiwan region, and quickly resume exchanges with the mainland.

Chiang Ching-kuo, as the sixth leader of the Taiwan region, adhered to the "one-China" principle during his administration and did not engage in "one China" -- one of his important measures was the decision in November 1987 to allow eligible mainlanders to visit relatives in Taiwan, which was a groundbreaking decision at that time and was appreciated by compatriots on both sides of the strait.

At present, cross-strait exchanges are at a standstill. Due to the dual impact of the authorities' policy towards the mainland and the new crown epidemic, ** became very tense, resulting in the interruption of most exchanges. Since the beginning of this year, there have been voices on the island calling for the resumption of exchanges with the mainland, and there are even rumors that mainland group tourists will be allowed to travel freely to Taiwan next year in order to boost Taiwan's tourism industry.

Ke Wenzhe's recent remarks are obviously aimed at the needs of voters on the island for cross-strait exchanges and an attempt to win the support of these voters. Although Ko Wenzhe was quite tough on the mainland in the early days of the campaign, he has now changed his stance and actively used mainland issues to win voter support.

During the election campaign, Ko Wenzhe not only attacked his rivals, but also expressed his support for cross-strait exchanges. He accused "Hou Kangpei" of being a "reunification faction" and hinted that after Hou Youyi takes office, the Taiwan region may turn to the mainland. At the same time, he also criticized Lai Qingde as a "turtle grandson" and tried to win the support of those voters who opposed it.

* It is generally believed that Ke Wenzhe's "peaceful" campaign may accelerate the collapse of his personal image and bring him a greater negative impact. The compatriots on the island have called for sincerely promoting cross-strait exchanges, but political showmanship may not work.

At present, Ke Wenzhe's support rate has been declining, and the gap with Lai Qingde and Hou Youyi is getting wider and wider. After the miscarriage of the "blue-white integration", Ke Wenzhe's chances seem slim. However, he still said that the results of the election on the island are difficult and that anyone has a chance before the end. Whether his remarks can affect the election results will have to wait for the final election results to be announced.
