The top of the seven latitudes and longitudes are the most mysterious and important points on earth

Mondo Science Updated on 2024-01-28

The so-called "seven important latitudes and longitudes" refer to the five parallels and two meridians of the equator, the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic circles, and the highest point is the highest place above sea level on these latitudes and longitudes, of course, a total of seven points.

Seven points from high to low ranking:

The highest point of the Tropic of Capricorn: the summit of Corona Hill, about 5,275 meters, 23°26 south latitude'0'', longitude 67°44 W'40''。

The highest point of the equator: the glacier on the southern slope of the Cayambi volcano, about 4695 meters, 0°0'0'', longitude 77°59 W'30''。

The highest point of the Tropic of Cancer: the southern slope of Yushan Xiaonan Peak, about 3660 meters, 23°26 north latitude'0'', longitude 120°57 W'37''。

The highest point of the 180° meridian: the middle of the western margin of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, about 3130 m, °0 south latitude'0''。

The highest point of the 0° meridian: west of the summit of the Épaule du Marboré, about 3065 m, °0 N'0''。

The highest point of the Arctic Circle: south of the Greenland ice sheet, about 2492 meters, 66°34 north latitude'0'', longitude 43°25 W'0''。

The highest point of the Antarctic Circle: the south-central part of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula, about 2143 meters, 66°34 south latitude'0'', longitude 64°40 W'31''。

1. The highest point of the Tropic of Capricorn: the summit of Corona Hill, about 5275 meters, 23°26 south latitude'0'', longitude 67°44 W'40''。Corona Volcano is located in a small area of northeastern Chile that protrudes eastward, near Bolivia and Argentina. It is flanked to the north by Lascar at 5,592 meters above sea level, and to the northeast by Aguas Calientes at 5,924 meters above sea level. Considering that the declination angle of the earth's axis will cause the degree of the regression line and the polar circle to swing slightly due to nutation, the degree of the regression line and the polar circle in this paper are fixed at 23°26'0''and 66 ° 34'0'', while latitude 23°26 south'0''Just past the summit of Corona Volcano.

From the northwest, you can see Corona Volcano (a raised peak on the right) and Laskar Volcano on the left.

2. The highest point of the equator: the glacier on the south slope of the Cayambe volcano, about 4695 meters, 0°0'0'', longitude 77°59 W'30''。At 5,790 meters above sea level, Cayambi is the third highest peak in Ecuador, with its summit just north of the equator and the southwest from the capital, Quito. The lower part of the glacier tongue on its southern slope is the highest point of the equatorial circle, and it is the only place on the equator where there is year-round snow and glaciers.

3. The highest point of the Tropic of Cancer: the southwest slope of Xiaonan Mountain in Yushan Mountain, about 3660 meters, 23°26 north latitude'0'', longitude 120°57 E'37''。Dongxiao Nanshan is the peak of the southern end of the southern edge of Yushan, and then the southern mountain body will decline rapidly, and the intersection of the Tropic of Cancer and the southwest slope of the Dongxiao Nanshan is the highest point on the Tropic of Cancer.

Looking up at the peaks of Yushan from the lower part of the south ridge, the peak in the upper right corner is Dongxiaonan Mountain, and a little below is the highest point of the Tropic of Cancer, and the middle is the main peak of Yushan.

Highest point of meridian: the middle of the western margin of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, about 3130 m, °0 south latitude'0''。This point is also the highest point of the heliographic line, because the helioscope crosses the ocean except for the Antarctic continent.

The highest point of the meridian: west of the summit of the Épaule du Marboré, about 3065 m, latitude 0 N'0''。At 3,073 meters above sea level, this peak is the 68th peak in the Pyrenees and belongs to the Marbore region, located in the middle of the mountain range to the west, with the prime meridian passing through the western side of the peak.

Looking up at the Mont Marbore region from the northern slope of France, the bulge on the left in the center of the map is the West Shoulder.

6. The highest point of the Arctic Circle: the south of the Greenland Ice Sheet, about 2492 meters, 66°34 north latitude'0'', longitude 43°25 W'0''。The Greenland ice sheet has a watershed that runs roughly north-south, and the highest point of the Arctic Circle is located in the middle of the north-south part of the ice sheet.

7. The highest point of the Antarctic Circle: the south-central part of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula, about 2143 meters, 66°34 south latitude'0'', longitude 64°40 W'31''。Only a handful of places in the Antarctic Circle pass through land, and in the East Antarctic, all of them pass through land or ice shelf edges, at low altitudes, and only on the Antarctic Peninsula are significant in elevation. This point is located in the south-middle of the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula (i.e. Graham Land) on the **ery plateau, and not far northwest of Graham's second highest peak, Slessor, at 2,370 meters above sea level.

From the Grandidier Channel on the west side of the peninsula, you can see the Loubet Coast of Graham Land and the mountains of the Avery Plateau behind it.
