BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The list of the world's top athletes has been expanded this year. In the 2023 list announced by the World Athletics Federation on the 12th, six famous players are on the list.
According to the official website of the World Athletics Federation, the best athletes in previous years were only men and women. But this year, there have been many great results in track and field, with 23 world records in one year. During the voting process, the World Athletics Federation received a lot of feedback that it was difficult to choose from among the many athletes, so it adjusted the award setting to select one man and one woman from each of the three fields of athletics, track and field, and off-field events, with a total of six best athletes.
The full list is as follows:
Men's Track Race: Lyles of the United States, who won three gold medals in the men's 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Budapest;
Women's Track Race: Kenyan middle-distance runner Kip, who has broken the world record three times in one year;
Men's Athletics: Swedish pole vaulter Duplantis, who broke the world record twice in one year;
Women's Athletics: Venezuela's ** long jumper Rojas, who has won four consecutive championships at the World Championships;
Men's off-track events: Kenyan Kiptum who broke the men's marathon world record;
Women's off-track events: Ethiopian runner Acefa, who broke the women's marathon world record.
Our best athletes have broken world records seven times this year, and they have won many major tournaments, including the World Championships. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said that the achievements of these athletes must be fully recognized in their respective fields.
Among other awards, the men's 800m silver medallist at the World Championships in Budapest, Kenya's Vanioni and his compatriot and the world championships bronze medallist in the women's 3000m steeplechase Cherotic won the men's and women's best rising star awards respectively. (ENDS).
