It's another year of plum blossoms, and the 2023 event has come to an end with the arrival of several heavy snowfalls. Where there is joy, there will be sorrow. Looking back on this year's event, I feel a lot of emotion.
2023 is my third year of pigeon breeding and my second year of racing. Since the purchase of the first breeder in March 2020, it has gone through the process of buying and eliminating, and then buying again. When I saw a pigeon that I thought was good, I couldn't help but want to buy it, and I regretted it. This is a vicious circle that pigeon owners experience.
In the autumn of 2023 I have a total of 12 pigeons, including 3 pigeons from the Kehl Youth team (1 from a friend) and 3 pigeons4 pigeons and 2 pigeons paid for the Weili One Loft Race;Shaanxi Chaoyang One Loft Race 3 pigeons, 1 paid;2 Oriental pigeons, 0 paid. In terms of the number of sheds, the storage rate is not very high: 50%. For this reason, I carefully sorted out the entire management process, and I believe that there are three reasons why my storage rate is not high this year:
1. Environmental changes. In December 2022, due to work reasons, I returned to Guanzhong from southern Shaanxi to work. At that time, due to the influence of "masks", the materials required for the construction of the pigeon loft could not be transported back, and the pigeons were brought back to their hometowns without a pigeon loft, and were temporarily locked in chicken coops for feeding. Until New Year's Day 2023, the "mask" problem was solved, and a 35m×1.5m×2.The 5m pigeon loft has a partition in the middle, which can be regarded as a "home" for the pigeons. At this time, it is already January 2, 2023.
Second, the breeding pigeon finishing time is too late. It was already the 2nd of January when the loft was built, so there was not enough time for the pigeons to get used to it. So after the pigeons were placed in the loft according to the male and female, the breeding pigeon sorting work immediately began. From the worms in the body to the intestines, although they are also being sorted out step by step, the effect is not ideal, because it is not possible to organize it on time every day. Because I work in the county seat, my hometown is still 83 kilometers away from the county seat, so the finishing work is not continuous. In addition, I used powder mixed with water for the breeding pigeons, and according to normal requirements, it should be drunk at the same time. But because of work, I can only mix water at one time and drink it for at least 2-3 days, and the finishing effect can be imagined.
3. The youngsters come out too late. Due to the late completion of the breeding pigeon, the pairing time was delayed. In addition, the breeders have changed to a new environment, and although they are successfully paired, there are often fights or wrong nests in the nest box. As a result, only four youngsters were successfully hatched in the first and second rounds of eggs in 6 pairs of breeding pigeons, and there were no pigeons to cross at the One Loft Swing. According to the analysis of the 6 pigeons lost in front of the toll booth, 2 were delivered on 20th June and 2nd on 10th July, both of which were hatched in less than 30 days.
Of the 6 pigeons paid, 3 were paid by the youth team and 1 was lost in the first passOne pigeon was lost in the second leg of the extra race, but was lucky enough to get the entry fee due to the prize from the Kehl Youth TeamThe other pigeon has been neither fast nor slow, always hovering in the thousands, and after two extra races, it can be regarded as a late arrival. Two of the Weili One Loft Races were paid, one of them lost the third pass, and one of them won the final 473rd, which was a round. Shaanxi Chaoyang One Loft Keeper paid 1 pigeon, which was lost in the final. This is my result for the autumn 2023 race, with 6 pigeons paid for the fee, 1 prize winner and 1 late pigeon.
It should be noted that the late arrival pigeon of the Kehl Youth Team is a pigeon that hatched after the eggs were cooled overnight (in the Guanzhong area, the temperature in the evening of mid-March was not recorded). During the incubation period, because of the fight between the breeding pigeons, two eggs fell to the manure tray under the nest box, and after a night of cooling, one of the eggshells was broken, and the other was found to be immobile when the other was illuminated with a flashlight. However, because of the fight between the breeders, there were no eggs to hatch, so the eggs that had been cold overnight were simply put back to continue to hatch. The results were normal and the youngsters showed no abnormalities. In the later stage, I don't know if it was because of the training and release injury or its own development problems, the keel had a bulge. This is probably the reason why this pigeon is always unhappy.
A few takeaways:
One is environmental changeIt really makes a difference in the breeding of the breeders. The biggest manifestation is that the adaptation to the environment is not as fast as expected, especially when it comes to the occupation of new territories.
Second, the pigeon finishing is very important. If the breeders are properly managed and the breeders themselves are healthy, they only need to be adjusted slightly before the pairing. If the usual management is average, it is important to pay attention to tidying up before pairing to ensure the health of the youngsters.
Third, the timing of the pigeon is very important. Pigeons that are too small are not competitive when they are delivered to the OL. Because the "big pot rice" is eaten in one loft, the pigeon is too young, and there is a situation where the food cannot be grabbed, and it is not competitive. There may be an impact on the storage shed. Of course, this is just my conclusion based on my pigeons and does not speak for any fancier.
