Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding, a shipbuilding subsidiary of HD Hyundai Group, announced on December 28, 2023 that it has signed a joint development project (JDP) with the Korea Bureau of Shipping (KR) to jointly develop inspection standards for the autonomous navigation system 'Hinas Control'.
According to the agreement, Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding and Venture Capital Company **ICUS will build and test autonomous ships equipped with the Hinas Control system and develop test procedures to prove their safety and reliability to shipping companies. The Korea Classification Society plans to review detailed evaluation items for autonomous navigation functions such as route planning settings, route and speed maintenance, and collision avoidance, and establish inspection standards.
It is reported that **ICUS is the first internal joint venture of HD Hyundai Group, which has developed a two-stage autonomous navigation system Haines Control, which enables perception and judgment as well as steering and control, and successfully completed the world's first autonomous ocean crossing of a large ship in 2022.
On this basis, ABICUS has received orders for more than 70 ships equipped with the Haines Control system, and plans to truly commercialize autonomous ships from January 2024, starting with the delivery of a 2500TEU container ship built by Hyundai Miura Shipbuilding.
An official from Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding said, "The company plans to improve its technological competitiveness in the field of autonomous ships by reducing construction tests and errors through systematic verification and establishing test procedures, and rapidly accumulating operating data." ”
*ICUS officials said: "The company is nearing the end of commercializing its autonomous navigation products in the field of large merchant ships, and plans to further strengthen cooperation with classification societies and shipyards to bring reliable products to market." ”
