On December 11, the United Auto Workers (UAW) said it had filed an allegation with the National Labor Relations Board of unfair labor practices at Honda, Hyundai and Volkswagen, alleging that the automakers illegally interfered with workers' unionization, CNBC reported.
UAW alleges that the management of Honda's Greensburg, Indiana, Hyundai Montgomery, Alabama, and Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant were involved in illegal "union-busting actions." According to UAW, these actions include Honda's surveillance of workers, as well as modern confiscation, destruction and prohibition of "materials supporting unions in non-working hours and non-working areas."
At Volkswagen, UAW alleges that management "harassed and threatened workers who spoke about unions, confiscated and destroyed pro-union materials in break rooms, attempted to intimidate and unlawfully suppressed pro-union workers, and attempted to unlawfully prohibit workers from distributing union publications and discussing union issues in non-workplaces during non-working hours".
UAW Chairman Shawn Fain said in a statement, "These companies are breaking the law by trying to get auto workers to sit and shut up instead of fighting for their own fairness." But these workers are showing management that they will not be intimidated and will not give up their right to speak out and fight for a better life. ”
Spokespeople for Honda and Hyundai denied UAW's allegations, saying it was up to workers whether they joined the union. Hyundai said in a statement, "The union's description of the incident in the statement is not accurate, and we look forward to going through the legal process and having a fair chance to show the facts." ”
A Honda spokesperson said in an email, "Honda encourages our employees to get involved and get information about this issue." We do not, and will not interfere with, the right of our employees to participate in activities that support or oppose UAW. Volkswagen said it "takes such allegations very seriously and will investigate accordingly." (Gasgoo Ramy).
