How many aircraft carriers are there in the world

Mondo Science Updated on 2024-01-30

According to the latest data, as of 2023, a total of 15 countries around the world have a total of 30 active aircraft carriers. These countries include:

United States: Has 11 aircraft carriers, including 10 Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and 1 Ford-class aircraft carrier.

China: It has 3 aircraft carriers, namely "Liaoning", "Shandong" and "Fujian".

Russia: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the "Kuznetsov".

United Kingdom: Has 2 aircraft carriers, namely the "Queen Elizabeth" class aircraft carrier.

France: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the "Charles de Gaulle" class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

India: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the "Vikramaditya".

Italy: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the aircraft carrier of the "Cavour" class.

Thailand: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the "Prince of Asturias" class aircraft carrier.

Brazil: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the "Ocean" class aircraft carrier.

Japan: Has 2 aircraft carriers, the "Hyuga" class and the "Izumo" class.

South Korea: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship.

Egypt: Has 1 aircraft carrier, the Mistral-class amphibious assault ship.

Australia: Has 2 aircraft carriers, namely amphibious assault ships of the "Canberra" class.

Thailand

Turkey: Although it is not explicitly mentioned whether it has an aircraft carrier, its first amphibious assault ship, the Anadolu, is considered a drone carrier.

It is worth noting that among these countries, only six countries – the United States, China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and India – have aircraft carriers in the true sense of the word, that is, with a full load displacement of more than 50,000 tons and a beveled deck design. While other countries, such as Thailand, Brazil, Australia, Egypt, Japan, South Korea, etc., their aircraft carriers or amphibious assault ships are considered "quasi-aircraft carriers" because they are closer in design and function to aircraft carriers, but have smaller displacement and size, and may not have the full set of facilities required for a complete aircraft carrier.
