Located in Beisanjia Town, Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun City, Liaoning Province, Qingyuan Pumped Storage is a key large-scale energy project in the national "13th Five-Year Plan". The total investment of the project is 10.9 billion yuan, with a capacity of 1.8 million kilowatts, and the installation of 6 reversible pump turbine power generation electric units with a single capacity of 300,000 kilowatts, with a designed annual power generation capacity of 3 billion kilowatt hours and an annual pumping capacity of 4 billion kilowatt hours, which are connected to the Liaoning power grid with two 500 thousand volt lines.

KingAgroot Pumped Storage is invested by State Grid Xinyuan Group, led by PowerChina Beijing Survey, Design and Research Institute, and jointly constructed by the Sixth Engineering Bureau and the Eighth Engineering Bureau of China Water Resources and Hydropower in the EPC general contracting mode, which is the first million-kilowatt complete EPC general contracting hydropower construction pilot project in China.

Qingyuan has a long construction period and high cost, and faces many difficulties such as complex geology, huge underground caverns, and severe cold weather. Yao Baoyong said that the EPC general contracting model integrating design, procurement and construction has overcome the mutual constraints and disconnection of design, procurement and construction, and greatly promoted the construction progress of the project under the premise of ensuring the quality and safety of the project.

At present, China is in a critical period of green and low-carbon transformation and development. Since entering the "14th Five-Year Plan", many places in Northeast China have made efforts to clean energy. Liaoning Province plans 48 major clean energy projects (categories), with a total investment of more than 800 billion yuan, and plans to increase the installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power generation in the province to more than 37 million kilowatts by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan", with clean energy accounting for more than 50%. Jilin Province strives to achieve an installed photovoltaic power generation capacity of 8 million kilowatts by 2025, and build three new energy bases of 10 million kilowatts in the province, including consumption, new energy delivery and new energy conversion (hydrogen production).

With the large-scale and high-proportion development of new energy, the demand for regulated power supply in the new power system is more urgent, and the development of pumped storage and new energy storage is the right time. At present, Liaoning Province is vigorously planning and building pumped storage projects, in addition to the Pushi River that has been put into operation and the Qingyuan project that has just been put into operation, Dalian Zhuanghe, Benxi Daya River and Huludao Xingcheng three pumped storage projects are being promoted. In Sandao Town, Hailin City, Heilongjiang Province, the highest pumped storage power station in China, the Huanggou Pumped Storage Power Station, has been fully put into operation, and the second large-scale pumped storage power station in Heilongjiang, the Shangzhi Pumped Storage Power Station Project, has started construction. In addition, the Jilin Dunhua Tara River Pumped Storage Project has also been approved.

In addition to pumped storage, a variety of new energy storage demonstration projects are also accelerating the implementation in Northeast China. On December 6, the world's first electric molten salt energy storage steam injection test station in Liaohe Oilfield in Panjin, Liaoning Province was completed and put into operation, the test station uses liquid molten salt as heat storage and heat transfer working fluid, converts solar thermal or valley power and green electricity into heat energy and stores it in molten salt, and then continuously releases heat energy to produce superheated steam for power generation.

In Baicheng City, Jilin Province, located in the eastern part of the Horqin Grassland, it has been planning to build a "North China Hydrogen Valley" since 2018, using clean energy such as wind and solar energy to produce hydrogen by electrolysis of water, so as to realize the gaseous storage of wind and solar energy.

Zheng Sheng'an, executive vice president of the China Hydropower Engineering Society, said that these energy storage projects have added giant "green power banks" in Northeast China, which will effectively promote the development and utilization of renewable energy, improve the stability and reliability of the power system, and make full preparations for the challenges of energy supply and transformation.
